Wow. Try this PC World article for a rockin' "how to" on downloading this.... http://www.pcworld.com/article/158756/getting_your_feet_wet_with_google_ocean_first_look_in_images.html Try this CNN video link for a great summary: http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/tech/2009/02/02/tatton.google.ocean.cnn?iref=videosearch Or National Geographic's Photo Gallery: http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2009/01/photogalleries/google-ocean-pictures-gallery/ I always get into a fit of inner-flummox-inducing debate over privacy vs the public good when I Google my address and stare at updated photos of my actual house from the angle of someone standing at my mailbox. It's creepy. It's a goody basket for the stalkers I don't- but one day might- have. I don't like it. (Unless, of course, I'm socially stalking someone else with the very same cyber tools. ha.) But then I watch the same technology give my children something I never had growing up- a vivid, fascinating and educational resource that lets them travel the world in which they live from my home computer. Not depicted "as it might be" but "as it IS." Google Earth (once dubbed Google Dirt) has unveiled their newest incarnation and it comes complete with a feature called Google Ocean that blows me away. After having successfully mapped most of the planet's "dirt" features, their team was challenged to take on the 2/3 of the world that is covered by water. So they teamed with over 100 of the world's top scientific and marine-oriented organizations (even surf clubs) to do just that. The result? Jaw-dropping. Absolutely jaw-dropping. It was unveiled today. Go see it. Also check out the link I've added for the Google LatLong site to find out about more new features....

Give and get what you REALLY want this Christmas by creating individual gift lists for your kids and yourself that you can email to friends and family. Or search for THEIR lists by entering their email addresses. Lists are updated as people purchase items and the giver doesn't have to dig around for your address- you've already entered all the details. Plus, these keep yourself uber organized. One-Click Shopping allows you to buy and send (for free with two-day shipping if you are a Prime member or availing of the one month free trial for that service) all Amazon items to people you've entered into your online address book or simply save the items in specifically categorized lists for later. The new Universal Wish List feature even allows you to add items that are on external sites to a Wish List. Handy dandy.

The installation is a breeze even relatively new hardware from my laptop was recognized without problems. If you are just thinking to try unbuntu, you can download a "live-cd". It allows you to run ubuntu without installing it. Ubuntu has all the necessary software for a rich internet experience included (Firefox, Thunderbird, IM). Also features Open Office which enables you to work on your Word and Excel files (Does not support the latest Word/Excel versions) For those who still need to use Windows from time to time, you can add ubuntu to your existing hard disk. At boot time, you will be asked which operating system you would like to use. Ubuntu can even read your data on the Windows partitions. Works with Vista too. This is a nifty little google widget from a developer in the midst of a project called The Human Calendar. Basically, it's just a little script that you copy and paste into your blog/social networking site/homepage that displays the date via real people holding up numbers. It won't solve any of the Top Ten problems plaguing modern civilization but it WILL add a bit of interest to your desktop when you wake up in the morning. And did I mention- Free??
