I'm deaf in one ear and an extremely deep sleeper. Lying with my good ear against the pillow, I've slept through fire alarms, medical emergencies, incessant phone calls, etc. After I slept straight through a midterm exam despite setting four different alarms in my room, I started losing sleep at night because there seemed to be no way to predict when I'd wake up the next morning. The Sonic Boom alarm clock has been a blessing on my nightstand for four years. Since then, as long as I've set this alarm, which uses A/C power and has easy-to-press buttons for setting the time and alarm, a snooze button, and a vibrating disk that slips under my pillow, I've never overslept again. Other features include an alarm tone that can be adjustable in volume and pitch, depending on hearing needs, and a flashing display, but I don't bother with either. The minor earthquake under my pillow is all I need. It's not very cute and it doesn't come in purple, but it lets me rest easy.

Watt Time integrates the iconic and familiar light bulb shape with your daily alarm clock. The light bulb shaped alarm clock not only adds some humor to your morning grind but might actually offer you one more reason to let go of your iPhone and blackberry. Time to put down your smart phone people, here’s an alarm clock that’s pretty enough to use! Watt Time is constructed out of high gloss, hard plastic allowing the digital time display to shine through the bulb’s outer wall. A bright blue LED display illuminates the time and date and an easily accessible snooze button located on top of the bulb’s socket end, makes it possible for you to get those “5 more minutes” you always need. If the sound is not enough to wake you, you have the option of setting the bulb to illuminate when your alarm goes off as well. Fear not, we’ve placed all set buttons discretely on the back of the bulb so as not to disturb the overall simplicity and beauty of the design.

Ok so maybe it was a little low to grab 'first to recommend'...but here're the details :) Let's keep it simple. It's an alarm clock. So it tells the time (with white on back digits...awesome...) and wakes you up. Oh, but the Zeo (I refuse to call devices as if they're people!) is also a personal sleep trainer, coach and cheerleader all in one. (I could be wrong on the cheerleader part.) It costs $399. Every night, you wear a soft, foam headband to bed. Using built in electrode sensors, the headband transmits wirelessly to the Zeo, telling it if you're awake, in deep, light, or REM (dream...not 'losing my religion') sleep. The display then shows a graph of the phases for your to review in the morning. But it also does some more. Using that basic data, the Zeo calculates all sorts of numbers and tells you: - Your 'ZQ' - a single score to help you quickly gauge the quantity, quality, and depth of your sleep each night. -'Total Z' – how long you really sleep each night, counting any perceived and unperceived awakenings that it can detect. - 'Time to Z' – the time it took you to fall asleep. - Time in Wake & Times Woken - How long you laid awake, and how many times you woke up - Total amount of REM, Light & Deep sleep. A cool feature is the SmartAwake alarm. You set the time you need to get up (say, 7.) If the Zeo detects that you are in a very light sleep a little prior to 7, it will sound the alarm to wake you up. It wont wake you up any earlier than a 1/2 hour prior to your set time, and if you don't hit any light sleep (say, you did shots all night) it will just sound the alarm normally. Sorry this is so tedious, but there's one bit more...the MyZeo website. Using the included SD memory card, you can transfer al your sleep data to your computer and the website. The site will then graph your data, find trends (like you sleep best at certain times) and ask questions (what did you do before you fell asleep? Did you drink?) to help it help YOU figure out how to get a better night's rest. A 6-month subscription is included with purchase, after that you have to pay. And...that's it. It's a sleep monitor and a smart alarm clock. Perfect for sleep perfectionists, sleep geeks (do they exist?) and....actually, perfectionists and geeks in general should love playing with this thing. Mainly geeks. But yeah, the headband? Not so sexy. Oh, and Zeo corp.? Since I basically just wrote an ad for your product, I'd gladly accept one shipped to my address. To test.

I have a love/hate relationship with Yanko Design's site. I love that they serve up a dazzling array of great products that make me literally bounce up and down in my chair and emit disturbing little "yip yip yip" noises. I hate the fact that some of the ones that bring me closest to retail ecstasy are only concepts. Sigh. This mechanical midget butler-wannabe is one of those. Just imagine: your alarm sounds and you roll over to find not a wad of bills left on the table from your guest the night before but your CHOICE of coffee, juice or hot chocolate AND TOAST! Yes, TOAST! And if you know me, you know I love me some toast. But alas, until this concept becomes a reality I will leave my ad in the paper for "vertically challenged mini-man to serve as morning butler. Some back-scratching required. Must wear gloves. Stumpy fingers creep me out."
