Aubrey Organics Earth Aware Cleaner

Aubrey Organics Earth Aware Cleaner

This is my new favorite all-purpose cleaner. In addition to being powerful and effective, it has this heavenly, slightly spicy aromatherapeutic scent that even my husband loves as he walks in the door. And coming from Aubrey Organics, it is of course 100% natural. I know a lot of people are becoming more concerned about the toxic effects of synthetic chemicals in cleaning products, and this is a great way to avoid them all together. I discovered this product as I started searching for all-natural alternatives to the cleaners I had in my cupboard. Also, this product is extremely cost-effective, because it is concentrated, so you only need to mix 1/4 cup of Earth Aware with one gallon of warm water. One bottle really goes a long way.

  • Rinse out your plastic bags and reuse them. Why not? A lot of times I get stuck using paper towels to dry my hands with, too, so I usually use those out to dry for reuse. This would work for that, too.

This is the ONLY coffee we will drink anymore. We started out trying it because it supports a wonderful, Inter-faith cooperative of coffee farmers in Uganda, but we continue to drink it because it is outrageously delicious. (Every once in awhile we run out, and I try to make some other coffee, and, somehow, my husband just knows instantly that he is being duped!) This coffee is organic, Fair Trade, and comes from a wonderful group of coffee farmers that has crossed all lines of faith and come together in an effort to create harmony in their community. In an area often filled with strife and discord, these farmers are showing their neighbors that those who work together, build peace and community together. Supporting this coffee helps guarantee their success, because it was purchased at a Fair Trade price.

Ever wonder how people washed their clothes thousands of years ago? In India, for over 2,500 years, they have used the dried fruit of the Chinese soapberry tree, which contains natural saponins (detergent). It is so gentle it can even be used as a toothpaste. And when you're done with the berries, you can add them to the compost pile. So why is this detergent so cool? We now know that many synthetic chemicals in detergents and cleaners are harmful irritants, at best, and toxic carcinogens at worst. Many people are starting to search for natural alternatives that aren't so risky, and that don't contaminate our bodies and our planet. It turns out there are people the world over who have known about the soapberry for not just hundreds, but thousands of years! If that isn't a testament to it's effectiveness, I don't know what is! And the soapberry is also supposed to have healing medicinal properties, according to Ayurvedic belief. I was skeptical, yes, and so I just had to try this product. It worked fantastically! Cleaned my clothes with no strong scents, and left them so soft (apparently it's a natural fabric softener, too). Maggie's Pure Land says that this detergent is great for babies, people with sensitivities and/or allergies, and anyone looking for a natural alternative to harsh detergents. There is a sample size you can try out without breaking the bank. So how do you use it? The soap nuts come with a cotton sack. You put a few of the "nuts" in the cotton sack, add it to your washing machine, and voila! you will have super clean clothes. Because the soap nuts do not sud much, they can effectively be use din high efficiency machines, too!

Finally, a drinking water bottle that makes sense on multiple levels. There are numerous environmental concerns that this bottle addresses: 1. Made from corn resin (also known as polylactic acid or PLA), unlike regular PET plastic, which is made from petroleum, this new plastic helps reduce our dependency on oil, and also helps reduce pollution produced during manufacture. 2. This bottle comes with its own carbon-based filter, unlike SIGG bottles or the like, and so it can be filled with regular tap water and you get to drink FILTERED water. Cool! 3. It can be reused up to 90 times, reducing waste, and then can be tossed guilt-free, or even recycled through special PLA recycling programs. Replacing it every so often helps eliminate the possibility of bacteria build-up in your bottle. I just love this bottle!! Check it out!!

You can actually leave their cleaners and detergents setting out, and they add some class to any room. The bottles are somehow vintage, yet modern, simple, yet elegant, and since they have a whole range of products, you can get all of your products to match. But looks are not why I love this product. This is a natural cleaner, free of phosphates, chlorine bleach, and other toxic and harsh chemicals. It is super-powerful: we have found it sufficient for all of laundry needs. The geranium scent is awesome, even my husband likes it. And they make a natural dryer sheet that is free of all the harsh chemicals hiding in regular dryer sheets (benzene, chloroform, toluene, etc.), and that smells equally delicious.

If you are searching for green products, you probably already know about the controversy surrounding the dangers of aluminum-containing chemicals used in anti-perspirants, which have been linked to increased danger of Alzheimer's Disease, among other problems arising from its use. Tom's of Maine has developed this deodorant using the natural anti-bacterial properties of hops and witch hazel, as well as the benefits of chamomile and lemongrass. Body odor is not caused merely by sweating, but by bacterial growth in the damp areas produced by sweat, and so the herbs in this deodorant tackle that head-on. I love the soft, floral scent of this deodorant, and the feeling that I am not putting my health in danger to smell good!

Perhaps you know that Cleopatra applied aloe vera gel to her face every day to preserve her beauty. But did you know that aloe vera also has amazing healing properties when taken internally? In Japan aloe juice is very popular to drink (they usually mix it with grape juice), but not so many people here in the US realize how beneficial it can be. What's so great about aloe vera? Aloe vera juice provides valuable polysaccharides that provide healing and anti-iflammatory properties, amino acids, folic acid, niacin, and many other vitamins. Aloe vera juice helps maintain regularity, is good for the intestinal tract, promotes healthy gums and lips (you can swish and gargle before you swallow), helps support normal muscle, joint and tissue functions, and can be applied topically for minor scrapes and irritations. So how does it taste? Well, it's quite flavorless, just a tad tart, and this juice, which is the fillet, or inner leaf, has a very slimy, chunky gel-like consistency that's kinda cool. It's best when mixed with a juice like grape or cranberry, where it just adds a slight tartness to the existing flavor. An ancient secret to staying young and healthy, both on the inside and outside.

This product proves that we can create a sustainable lifestyle by altering the way we think about the products we use. If a mug can be made from corn instead of plastic, what other sorts of products could we produce this way? Well, if you are looking to go a little bit greener, then recycled paper towels are the ticket. In fact, recycled paper everything would be great, but I'll be honest. Seventh Generation's recycled facial tissue and toilet paper are a bit too flimsy for some people (I use them, but I know a few people who won't). The paper towels, on the other hand, are just like other regular (not super-absorbent) paper towels out there.

By using the natural process of evaporation with the Zeer Pot, that's how! Basically the Zeer Pot consists of two clay pots nestled inside each other, with the space in-between the two pots filled with wet sand, and the contents residing in the inner pot. Both pots are covered by a damp cloth. The natural process of evaporation draws the heat out of the inner pot, helping to preserve the food. How cool is that?! Unfortunately, I haven't found a retailer in the States, but it appears easy to make.... give it a try!
