I've seen this movie and read this book a ton. I love watching/reading it - the story is beautifully told and captivating. While it's focused on a Chinese family, I still identify with the Asian-American aspect of it.

I'll never know what my mom really went through to come over to the U.S. from Korea but this book details some experiences other Koreans have/could have. The story is told from the viewpoint of a young child and many of the terms... The story is told from the viewpoint of a young child and many of the terms/concepts referenced are familiar to me (mi gook=america/american, Young Ju is actually my cousin's name, halmoni=grandma) but I'm sure I'll learn more form this book.

As I skimmed, I realized this was something interesting and that this author had managed to put into [eloquent] words how I had felt and thought about various aspects of my life. Overall, it pushed/opened the doors to thinking about what being hapa really means (to which, of course, I still don't have an answer).

I still have one of my geography readers so they definitely have some value beyond the classroom as this one does. While not solely focused on hapa culture, the concept of 'mixed race' still applies in full force.

My mom doesn't talk too often about growing up in Korea, but when she does it's both intriguing and slightly uncomfortable (mainly because she discusses all the opportunities she didn't have and how she's always wanted them for me). Either way, it's interesting to know how others cope with being of Asian descent.

Essays seem to be the medium of choice in which hapas tend to describe their hapa-experiences eloquently. I enjoy reading them because it's rare that I actually take time out for myself to truly reflect on my unique heritage, and... I can't believe I haven't recommended this book yet! It's a wonderful book that I first read in high school about a Hawaiian family that has been split apart and gone through much more tragedy/drama than most. There's also refer... It's a wonderful book that I first read in high school about a Hawaiian family that has been split apart and gone through much more tragedy/drama than most. There's also references to hapa-ness. It's a beautifully written novel that explores the bonds of motherhood, Hawai'i, and more amongst the 5 main women in the novel.

Mandu is actually similar to pierogi. It's a boiled dumping. Generally the ones I ate have meat and some other mixings. They're simple and yummy. I particularly like them with hot sauce.

Like I said, I'm part Polish. That's where I get my fair skin that burns oh so easily and the last name ending with '-ski.'
