Finn Crisp Originals

Finn Crisp Originals

Finn Crisp Originals are hands-down my favorite crackers. Excellent for dipping into CIBO pesto sauces and really good w/cheese too. Also good w/sardines if you like that sort of thing. Thin, super-crunchy, and w/a hint of rye/caraway, these go down easily. Lots of fiber too so they help scrub out your insides too ;-)

  • The perfect snack. My favorite is the Wasabi and Soy Sauce Flavor. Oh by the way, this is actually FILLING! One handful should do the trick.

I recently discovered Sahale Snacks and they are AWESOME! I love to eat healty food and Sahale's stuff are basically nuts and dried fruits w/a bit of spices added (they do add some corn syrup too which is a bummer but not much of it) Anyway, I am way into the pistachio Ksar snack: sweet and spicy. Also really digging the Sorocco macadamia and papaya snack. These snacks are like savory versions of Larabars (which I love but get tired of all sweet all the time) In any event, if you want something tasty and spicy and healthy, try these sahale snacks. They do have a lot of fat in them but I think that is good because it makes me feel full when I eat some of it and it is generally all good/healthy nut fat so your body digs it too

Peanut butter is a staple in my diet. As I've gotten older and more concerned about what is in my food, I abandoned the Jif and Skippy with it's added sugars and stabilizers and moved to natural peanut butter. Maranatha butter, out of Oregon, is the best I've tasted. Somehow they managed to make a spread that tastes like peanuts but has a sweet note. If the peanut butter is this good, their almond and cashew butters are probably worth a try too.

Plus, of course chocolate is delish. Gojis are also really good too: they are sweet but not overly so and have a vaguely strawberry flavor to them. Supposedly, monks in the himalayas have been munching on goijis to great effect for a few millenia.

I live off of LaraBars and as much as I like them, I am even more psyched to roll my own YouBar. I am using a cashew butter base w/cinnamon, cocoa, dates, and walnuts (and some extra protein) in my YouBars. And some molasses (not necessarily the most healthy ingredient but damned tasty). YouBar is the wave the future in personal nutrition. They need to expand on the number of ingredients you can add, like flax seed or straight-up omega 3 supplements

Forget that pre-bagged nasty (and mostly unhealthy stuff). Just pour in your popcorn kernels and pop (2 minutes and 30 seconds is the perfect time in my microwave). You have a delish and healthy snack. If you want to indulge add some melted butter, some different seasonings (I like chili powder) and you have a gourmet snack. You will never go back to the nasty pre-bagged again.

OK, I know dried meat products are not for everyone and turkey jerky in particular can gross some people out. However, if you do have the good sense to have a palate that appreciates great dried meats, I HIGHLY recommend Snackmaster's free range turkey jerky. Hot & Spicy is my fav and my kids love teriyaki. Snackmasters uses super-high quality turkey and cuts it into slices (none of that weird "formed" meat that looks like it gets extruded from a machine). Turkey jerky is a great snack for athletes as it is high protein, has a lot of salt to replenish lost salts, is low in fat and cholestrol. And it is is liteweight and easily portable so it is ideal for multi-pitch climbs or mountain bike rides.

I love pretty much all types of stone fruits (ie plums, peaches, apricots, etc) and I especially love the new hybrid stone fruits. Probably my favorite of all the stone fruit hybrids is the Flavorella Plumcot, a super-sweet and juicy, yellow-fleshed cross between a plum and, you guessed it, an apricot. Plumcots are totally delicious, super-refreshing, and totally a summer favorite, awesome for picnics. Kids love them too though they can be a bit messy because they are so juicy and it gets all over their faces. Biggest bummer about the flavorella plumcots is that they are only in season for a couple of weeks in late May/early June

It has a nutty flavor, is sticky and makes long threads like spidersilk, and has a smell you either appreciate for its complexity or you think it smells like an old sneaker. Kotsubu Natto is one of my favorite brands of pre-made natto. I personally like to eat my natto plain and mixed w/a bit of ponzu sauce or on top of some steamed rice. I love Kotsubu Natto but my wife thinks it is vile. If you have never tried it and like to sample more unusual foods, I highly recommend natto. I think it is totally delicious. Additionally, it is rumored to have amazing health benefits such as being good for your heart and immune system, as well as being packed w/veggie protein. Live long and prosper thru natto!!!

I know sardines are not for everyone, but if you do like canned sardines and have not tried CP's Brislings in olive oil, I suggest you do so. Lightly smokey flavor, brislings are small w/a firm texture but are not fishy tasting. The olive oil ones taste better than the water or soy oil to me. Brislings are great on toast or Finn Crisps w/pesto sauce. Plus, sardines are super-healthy. As a cold-water fatty fish, they have a lot of omega-3 in them which is a natural anti-inflammatory and can help myriad parts of your body last longer and perform better. Sardines are also lower in heavy metals than most other types of fish and have a pretty high protein content. These canned sardines are also great to take on climbing trips. Small, compact, tasty. For some reason, sardines taste 1000x better when you are a few hundred feet off the deck.
