Modest Needs is the Web 2.0 of charities. Everything it does is transparent, funds are given based on voting from a distributed community of judges, it runs with very low cost and it is founded on a simple, but effective idea: Poverty often starts with a small tragedy. The unexpected medical bill, the car that breaks down so you can't get to work, etc. These types of events can start the spiral down the credit card debt hole that you can't get out of. A well timed gift of a relatively small sum of money can prevent this slide. A well run and rewarding charity to give to.

This book is perhaps the best example of such layering I have seen this year. "Deus ex machine" is a literary term, a reference to a former movement of motorcyclists and the name of a thriving custom bike business with outposts in Australia, Indonesia and (soon) Venice, California. This book captures this cycle-driven zeitgeist in text and color photography.

But "Home by Novogratz" turns interior design into performance art, with the husband-and-wife team at the helm letting their six kids into the act along with their clients. And, although they do attempt some insane feats with lucite, paint, handmade wallpaper and repurposed furniture, they are not tragically hip but brilliantly off-the-wall. You just might want to get two copies of this book . . .

Boy, will be accompanying the floats and the bands and the dancers of a more traditional ilk. Personally, I think he's adorable. Almost as adorable as Stain Boy, who is now available at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (otherwise known as LACMA.) Burton's work is ugly-cute personified . . . and totally unique. In other words, it's art.
