Darling (1965)

Darling (1965)

Following the break-up of a teenage marriage, Diana Scott (Julie Christie) drifts into the world of modeling and acting, where she meets a television news reporter, Robert Gold (Dirk Bogarde), who leaves his family for her and introduces her to a more powerful and wealthy set. Soon Diana meets somebody more attractive: public relations mogul Miles Brand (Laurence Harvey). After briefly leaving and then drifting back into Robert's life, Diana eventually leaves the swinging London scene behind and settles down to an unfulfilling if comfortable life as the wife of millionaire Italian widower Cesare (Jose-Luis deVillalonga). Shocking in its day, Darling (1965) won Oscars for its costumes and script from Frederic Raphael. My favorite actress Julie Christie won an Oscar for her portrayal of a bored, amoral fashion model in this cynical melodrama from director John Schlesinger. .

The film is based on the Orphean myth and on Giuseppe Verdi's opera La Traviata. It tells the story of a young, English poet Christian who falls in love with the star of the Moulin Rouge, cabaret actress and courtesan Satine. Both characters break out into love songs of all my favorite hits.

Christopher Guest's new movie 'For Your Consideration' is well worth seeing and we enjoyed it. This is a movie that aims straight to the Hollywood community and most the gags and funny lines are inside jokes. The film focuses on the making of an independent movie and its cast who become victims of the dreaded awards buzz. Although it is a highly enjoyable movie, I felt it somehow lacked the usual Guest's sparkle.
