Heartsmart Cooking For Family And Friends: Great Recipes, Menus and Ideas for Casual Entertaining

This is my other all time favorite book of Bonnie's - you should see all the food stains on it from making so many of her recipes.

Tanya Barnard and Sarah Kramer are self-described lazy vegetarians who decided to go vegan for the love of animals and for the challenge of reworking their diet. Using a good measure of imagination and some common sense, the two friends started to realize that the transition wasn't painful at all - it was actually pleasurable. How It All Vegan is a showcase of some of the amazing recipes that they discovered and created. And while the soups, salads, entrees and deserts are all deliciously presented, the book goes the extra mile by also offering recipes for vegan cosmetics, hair products, pet treats and household cleaners. How It All Vegan is the biggest step one could make towards an animal-free diet and lifestyle.

She's got everything: a great career, a boyfriend, a loyal best friend. But a terrible accident leaves this beauty a hideous monster with only half a face! In fact, no one will even acknowledge she's alive until she meets Brandy Alexander, Queen Supreme, who's one operation away from being a woman. She teaches her how to reinvent herself into something better and how to get revenge on her two-timing ex-boyfriend and back-stabbing best friend in Chuck Palahniuk's Invisible Monsters.

Yann Arthus-Bertrand, an artist that wants to help us all fall in love with the Earth. Long before Planet Earth came out, Yann already traveled around the world taking aerial shots of our home planet. Originally presented as an art project displayed on huge boards from city to city, all the photos are now compiled in this book. Each photo with a caption from an expert in that environmental field to identify the beauty...or the destruction we maybe be causing to our living planet. If you loved planet earth You will love this book...

When we forget to keep our checks and balances in place? What happens when science becomes the be all, end all...the most important subject on earth? Margaret Atwood provides an extreme insight of a world in which science has crossed all boundaries and things like art and literature are cast aside like dirty socks. A beautiful tale of humanity and the result of the ultimate utopia can be found within and it won't disappoint. One of my favorite picks, which I've recommended to multiple people, and all have loved this book. The last thing I can say is...wait until you meet the ultimate human race (the Crakers), the pigoons, the rakunks and so much more!

The only thing I can say is...we should be thankful for Randy Pausch's Cancer...not for his family...but for the world...because we are blessed to be able to read such beautiful word which otherwise would have never been written.

It's weird, when you think about the book, it doesn't seem like a lot actually happens, but I could not put this book down. Each chapter reads like a new little story, interwoven with the rest of the stories. It's amazing. Yes, it's a kids book, but it doesn't read like one. I finished it in two days (work days, no less).

Another great Canadian climate book, this time with heavy hitters Jeffrey Simpson of the Globe & Mail, and Mark Jaccard, one of the world's leading experts in climate change, energy policy, and economics. A truly brilliant read, with oodles of policy suggestions. Only one question remains: Can we get Stephen Harper to read this?!!

The book that launched a worldwide revolution in the way we think about and consume food. Vancouverites Smith and MacKinnon begin talking about where the food they eat comes from, and how far in food-miles items have traveled. They somewhat naively agree to eat nothing but food that comes from within 100 miles of their home for one year. An interesting experiment begins that tests their relationship, resiliency and patience, but the story is completely captivating. These two have done more for the environment and small farmers through this experiment and book than one could ever imagine. A great read and a great way to live (with a little flexibility of course!)

I haven't read this book, but I did read Nikiforuk's last book, Pandemonium, and was blown away by it. Nikiforuk is the rare author who can take science and complex issues and write it into easily understandable and yet not dumbed down prose. For those of you that don't know about the Tar Sands in Alberta.... oy. Its UGLY. Its BIG. Its almost singlehandedly driving the Canadian economy right now. So its a tough issue. I can't wait to read this and see how Nikiforuk grapples with the pros and cons.

So right there he's got my vote. But the book is a no-nonsense review of what is really going on in the field of climate change science, and no one can tell it better than Weaver. At times a bit sciency, but never over your head, he tells the story with a Canadian focus. I particularly enjoyed the overview he gives of journalistic balance and how peer-reviewed science should be an exception, instead of giving an very small minority of (and might I add INSANE) climate deniers equal voice in the media, thus confusing the public about whether or not climate change is even happening! (IT IS). A great read, if you're not sure about climate change - READ IT. If you think you know everything there is to know - READ IT. Good stuff.

Studies of human decision making shows that people, even though they believe climate change is a real issue, often are not willing to undertake even minor alterations in behaviour because they don't face the realities of climate change every day. This book could scare the *@#%# out of them and make them realize that there ARE very grave futures for all of us if we don't act NOW on climate change. Great book.

  • Important book by a politician that's really found his true calling. Couple this with a viewing of the documentary of the same name.
