Everything is O.K with Me by Boaz Sharabi

Boaz Sharabi is one of Israel's top artists. He has been around for quite a long time now, has published a lot of albums, and he still a favourite with many, many Israelis. This here is one of his successful albums, published in 1984. It features a mix of ballads and pop songs. A certain touch of melancholy is Sharabi's hallmark, and I think it matches really well to his voice.

First of all, Gidi Gov is what is called "an institution" among Israel's musicians and songwriters. Second, "Laila Gov" is his own show, which is all about good musics, fellow musicians, sessions and good talks, and people love it. This CD release is the first in a series of "Best of Laila Gov" - it's two CDs full of famous Israeli songs, newly interpreted by Gov and his guests in the studio.

  • "HaChalonot HaGvohim" sound a bit like "The Mamas and the Papas" singing Hebrew. But their songs are nice, with a 60ish beat , of course, and good lyrics.

If you aren't fond of heartfelt ballads and oriental pop songs, then this is probably not for you. At least three of the oriental-beat songs of this album have been adapted for "Rikudei Am" (Israeli folk dance, the national sport of Israelis), and they're really fun to dance.

  • Dudu Tassa is great. This CD features some good songs with a beat and quite funk-souly brass, and also the lyrics are quite sophisticated. I love to listen to this album when I work, but I also have it ready to go on my mp3 play... Dudu Tassa is great. Sarit Hadad is a singer whom people usually either love or hate - nothing in between. She has gone through an interesting change, stylewise, from slightly trashy to perfectly styled (at times almost like Madonna). Her songs probably belong into the "easy entertainment" corner; they're played at weddings and parties, they're fun and have this greek-style beat that's simply viral. The lyrics? Nothing to write home about, nothing deeply philosophical: love, macho men, lost love, simple life... This CD was one of her hits, and I think it shouldn't miss on the shelf "for party fun".

  • Meir Banai released this album in 1992, and it is quite a nice, at times calm, mainstream-y album. The lyrics are completely in Hebrew and range from pensive to nostalgic. One of my favourite albums of his.

Who doesn't know Ofra Haza, Israel's musical ambassador at the 1983 Eurovision (where she performed "Chai" and ranked second) and performer of movie soundtracks (such as "Prince of Egypt" or "La Reine Margot"). "Im Nin'Alu", a chart breaking single in 1988, eventually made her famous all over the world. "Yemenite Songs" is probably a lesser known album of Ofra Haza, but it is nevertheless a beautiful one. Being of Yemenite origin herself, she performs popular Yemenite-Jewish songs, such as "Im Nin Alu" or "Ode leEli". The songs are sung in Aramaic.

Teapacks, who went under "Tipex" before they got into trouble with the big brand of wipeout fluids, published this CD in 1993, and it was quite an instant hit. It was their second album, and by '93 they still performed in smaller bars. Their album performace which I attended in a small Tel Aviv club in 1993 was great. The songs added quite a new touch to the Israeli music scene, the lyrics are witty and funny, often critical and on the point of actual political matters.

Yoni Rechter was part of Kaveret, another famous Israeli band. This CD was released in 2004, and I have it on my playlist ever since then. Not only are the songs well selected, but I love the interpretation by the artists.
