This dress would divinely suit that purpose. It's a knee length dress with a flattering skirt and boat neck (say hello to my pretty collarbones).

Being that it's just knee length and is strapless (so you can tone it down with a black cardigan) this dress takes the best of tartan and manages to not make people be overwhelmed with the excess of plaid.
