This is darling and even the packages of ink cartridge refills are adorable, but I'm not ready to spend over twenty dollars for a single pen. This would make an excellent gift for a writer though.

I'm not really a pen geek. I don't remember my pens and pencils by model name or make suggestions to friends. I don't read pen blogs (my guess is they're out there) or press releases from OfficeMax. I don't read pen blogs (my guess is they're out there) or press releases from OfficeMax. However, because JetPens.com is such a cool and easy to browse site, AND because my handwriting resembles a chicken's scrawl, except that the chicken in question is either severely arthritic and/or somewhat demented - I often, perhaps vainly, search for a new pen or pencil that will make my scribbling just a wee bit more legible. Well, I haven't found one yet, but I did find a pretty cool pencil. I long ago chose mechanical pencils for their crisp lines and paper feel, no sharpening needed approach, and the fact that I could erase on the fly (a really useful feature when your instructor tells you to 'forget the last 5 minutes'.) Oh yes, the review. the Uni-ball Kuru Toga line takes a really, really unheard of problem and fixes it. See, before I found this pencil, I was simply UNWARE that mechanical pencils were flawed. Every time you write, you dull the led, and usually in the same direction you're writing in. This leads to uneven lines, 'catches' on paper, and worst of all, broken leads (you know that annoying 'clicking' sound in class? That's me with my broken lead pencil.) Apparently, in Japan, they have pencil engineers. Someone at Uni-ball took it upon themselves to solve this problem, and they did! A fascinating, geared mechanism inside the clear plastic grip (you can watch it in action) rotates the lead a teeny amount every time you lift the pencil from the page, ensuring even wear and straight, uniform lines. Best of all, it makes it much harder to break the lead - so I'm not spending so much time in class clicking during tests. It really does work, and it's about $6 - not bad for a reusable device. I like the bright orange color, but it comes in a nice palette of neon styles. It's also available in 5 or 3 mm widths. My new, regular pencil. Ok, reading over this post, maybe I am a pencil geek.

oh joy! the wonderfulness of a gel pen, with the option of erasing. while i love pens and writing, i am always making mistakes. this is not your typical erasable, there is a special thermo-fancy ink that completely rubs away by th... oh joy! the wonderfulness of a gel pen, with the option of erasing. while i love pens and writing, i am always making mistakes. this is not your typical erasable, there is a special thermo-fancy ink that completely rubs away by the friction of the special eraser-that-isn't-an -eraser . my only rub (har) is that the eraser tip is not at the end of the pen cap, which means that i can't write with the pen cap on the back of the pen. (yes i do that much erasing) and the ink is slightly more watery than gel-y, but the way it completely erases is amazing. there are links to youtube demos, and i was definitely sold. no eraser debris, nothing. definitely a testament to pen-technology.

That's where a pencil with an eraser becomes handy. This is the first mechanical pencil that just works. My handwriting is beyond the pale, and I exert too much pressure when I scribble. But the Graphgear has multiple points where it hold the lead, making it much harder to break. A very good eraser is hidden under the cap. Nice grip too, with a solid, well balanced weight. If you need to write with pencils I would highly recommend this one.

I realize now that I'm a bit of a pen and pencil geek, which is weird, 'cause my handwriting is comparable to a first grader's who is on a considerable amount of LSD. The bond persists, though. The Uni-Ball DX UM-151 (big name)... The Uni-Ball DX UM-151 (big name) is one of my recently found favorite all purpose pens. It's got a smooth flowing gel ink that WON'T smudge. It's tip comes in .28 or even .18 mm sizes (fellow geeks will understand) - perfect for crisp, clear writing. I've used mine to label lab beakers. It sturdy plastic with a nice cover to protect the solid (hard to break) tip. Another nice feature of the pen are the available colors - I prefer Blue/Black, which is just what it sounds like and looks quite nice. Elegant, actually.
