This coffee roaster based in Alhambra has, after much delay, finally established a retail cafe presence in Silver Lake (Los Angeles, CA). Its upscale take on coffee, with loungey decor and slick presentation, is a nice change from the fast food atmosphere of your local Starbucks and the dinginess that usually goes with indie cafes. But the real draw is their coffee, which can be had from Siphons, Clovers, French Presses, Eva Solos, Chemex, espresso, mixed in specialty drinks, and probably even plain old drip coffee for the stubborn folks just looking for a caffeine fix (who don't know what they're missing). The food isn't shabby either, though its pretensions (read: price tag and presentation) may not really match up in quality just yet. The salmon risotto was so-so; don't bother with the salad; pastries were just okay, etc. I hear breakfast is better, but haven't tried it out yet. Try the Ethiopia Gololcha via Clover if available, it tastes like blueberries! You can order their coffees and teas online, but their in-store selection is better. TIP: if you buy beans, save the tin and return it for $1 off your next purchase. Also in the neighborhood are a few design shops like Yolk and A+R, and Intelligentisa coffee just a few blocks down Sunset.
