Today there are over 500 species of goldfish found throughout the world. Goldfish come in different colors such as gold, pink and bronze. They possess the sub-colors such as calico and metallic. The colors on goldfish come from their skin, not their scales. Their scales are transparent. Goldfish skin will "tan' like human skin, and for the same reason. So goldfish kept in ponds (sunlight), will be darker and have more vibrant colors due to more pigmentation. If a goldfish is left in the dark it will turn almost white. Goldfish have the longest lifespan of any fish ever domesticated by humans. An average lifespan of a goldfish is about 5-10 years, they can live 20 years or more if properly cared for. The oldest recorded goldfish was one raised by a couple in England.It lived to be over 40. In Chinese, Korean and Japanese culture, goldfish is considered as an invitation and magnet to wealth, prosperity, and harmonious movement, especially in business and personal affairs. In Chinese, goldfish is pronounced Jin Yu. Yu sounds exactly like bounty/surplus. Therefore goldfish became a symbol of surplus and wealth, and a gift of goldfish is a blessing in the hope of good fortune. In Feng Shui, a painting of goldfish is regarded as having the same effect as an actual goldfish tank by practitioners. In ancient Greece, people believed goldfish enhanced good luck in marriage and relationships. Ancient Egyptians kept goldfish in the house as a lucky omen for the family and helped cheer up domestic situations. During the 1620s, it became a tradition in Southern Europe for married men to give their wives a goldfish on their one year anniversary. People believed goldfish signify good luck and fortune. As one of the most beautiful and versatile species of fish, goldfish is one of the most attractive creatures in an aquarium, home, hotel, restaurant and malls, or parks. It was first domesticated in China,960-1279 and introduced to Europe in the late 17th century. Goldfish can grow to a maximum length of 23 inches (159 cm) and a maximum weight of 9.9 pounds (4.5 kg), although this is rare; few goldfish reach even half this size. The oldest recorded goldfish lived to 49 years, but most household goldfish generally live only six to eight years, due to being kept in bowls. The collective noun for a group of goldfish is a "troubling." In 1162, the Empress of the Song Dynasty ordered the construction of a pond to collect the red and gold variety of those carp. By this time, people outside the imperial family were forbidden to keep goldfish of the gold (yellow) variety, yellow being the imperial color. This is probably the reason why there are more orange goldfish than yellow goldfish, even though the latter are genetically easier to breed. During the Tang Dynasty, it was popular to dam carp in ponds. As the result of a dominant genetic mutation, some of these carp displayed gold (actually yellowish orange) rather than silver coloration. People began to breed the gold variety instead of the silver variety, and began to display them in small containers. The fish were not kept in the containers permanently, but would be kept in a larger body of water, such as a pond, and only for special occasions at which guests were expected would they be moved to the much smaller container. The occurrence of other colors was first recorded in 1276. The first occurrence of fancy tailed goldfish was recorded in the Ming dynasty. In 1502, goldfish were introduced to Japan, where the Ryukin and Tosakin varieties were developed.In 1611, goldfish were introduced to Portugal and from there to other parts of Europe.
