American Burnish gives centuries-old gold- and silver-leafing and varnishing techniques a modern aesthetic. Says Bill Gauthier of his work with partner Deborah Bigelow, "Putting a contemporary spin on gilding, varnishing and japanning keeps the art forms alive by expanding possibilities for their uses in today’s interiors." American Burnish designs, which can be applied to walls, panels, glass and tabletops, are inspired by textile patterns, Oriental prints and paintings. (The leaf is available in a rainbow of 24 colors.) They welcome visitors to their Beacon, New York, studio, and have had commissions as far away and prestigious as a Tadao Ando-designed museum in Japan.
