Metropolis | The Complete Metropolis by Fritz Lang
in 2010 I attended North American Premier of The Complete Metropolis at the historic Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood California. There where three things that made the screening of the newly restored Fritz Lang masterpiece an unforgettable experience, the breathtaking look of the restored film was like nothing I've seen before, the additional film from the Buenos Aires Museo del Cine 16mm dupe negative discovered in 2008 that was considerably longer than any existing print. It included not merely a few additional snippets, but 25 minutes of "lost" footage, about a fifth of the film, that had not been seen since its Berlin debut in 1927. But it was the live soundtrack composed and performed by Boston based Alloy Orchestra that made the whole evening come together, their fresh contemporary score enhanced the story, giving new life to the familiar and unfamiliar scenes. I highly recommend seeing The Complete Metropolis in the theatre with live accompaniment, but if you can't the DVD or Blu-ray is a must, and will not dissapoint.
