They have a storied history though, and they certainly flash it with their new Machine à Ecrire Le Temps automaton. The founder of Jaquet Droz built automatons - self powered, primitive computers or toys that wowed the gilded heads of the day. Things like a wind-up, movable knight in amour. Or a life-size doll which with the press of a button, elegantly scribbled some common writing exercises in a journal. Even a chess playing mechanical man. Seeking to go back to it's roots (and have something to wow with at BaselWorld '09), Jaquet Droz meticulously engineered the fully mechanical (no electricity!) 'Time Typewriter'. Wind a crank, and the gears turn, levers move, pulleys pull, and ultimately, the pen is lifted and moved over an index card - where it proceeds to write out the current time. The YouTube link is to a video of the machine in action. JD is producing these, but essentially upon request - with a price of 400K Swiss Francs, they probably don't have many extras lying around. If you want one (and can afford it), visit: http://www.jaquet-droz.com/english/contact.html And let them know to start building one for you.

The Thermal Ring bottle is one of them. It's a Sigg thermos (double walled for insulation of hot or cold items) in a standard style shell. The cap twists off with an oversized ring handle, which, best of all, doubles as a self-standing cup! Pricey at $39.99, but it's Sigg, and these things last.

While the watch itself has a storied history (the XVI are roman numerals) I'm just attracted to the look - and the fact that, if I actually saved up awhile, I could afford it ($3700). I like the silver on silver contrast, and the Guilloché dial. The white hands and numerals are particularly striking. Like most watch companies, IWC has been increasing the diameters of their watches. The Mark XVI clocks (ha! actually, that wasn't too good) in at 39mm. This is tiny compared to the dinner-plate size watches that are the norm. While those have a place, my skinny wrists and quite elegance ( I like to think :D ) demand something a bit more toned down. The XVI straddles the line between sporty-casual and dress-casual; it's quite versatile. Watch geeks, inside you'll find an ETA 2892, fine tuned and with parts replaced by IWC. Stainless steel case and band, water resistant to 60 meters and it even has an iron inner case for magnetic field protection. Check out the second picture for a more real -life view. Anyone care to buy this for me? UPDATE: I now own this! It's just a great as I expected and even a better looker in real life.

  • I think the round dial overlapping the larger piece of the bracelet make for a stunning watch!

Quite popular in the relative utopia of Switzerland, tn has recently made its entrance to the states and is expanding its distribution here. tn Sunglasses are made for serious sport - they have excellent, non slip grips, practically unbreakable frames, interchangeable lenses and cool designs to boot! I have the Force One model which is great. It comes in a zippered case with a microfiber cleaning cloth. There are slots for the included 3 interchangeable lenses for different conditions and sports.
