Sixteen Candles

I soo related to this movie in high school. Didn't we all? Ah, teen angst.

The soundtrack to the movie single is wonderful but the film is so so, a bit boring. This was romantic comedy that made more sense in the last five years than it did in 1992 when I was just beginning to understand what or who I was going to be. The movie is set in Seattle with you guessed it a soundtrack of grunge (except for Nirvana). I mean, the soundtrack starts with “Would” by Alice in Chains and ends with “Drown” by the Smashing Pumpkins. In between, you get tracks from Pearl Jam, Sound garden, and Mudhoney. Overall I recommend the album because music is never dated but the film, gosh I can start hating the 90s again because of it.

You could dismiss this movie as another drug movie but Drugstore Cowboy a bit more than that. The 1989 crime drama written and directed by Gus Van Sant introduces to an ensemble that today still makes us fall in love with Matt Dillon, Kelly Lynch, Heather Graham, and William S. Burroughs. Filmed mainly around Portland the story follows drug addicts as they travel across the US Pacific Northwest in the early 70s, supporting their habit by robbing pharmacies and hospitals. A highlight of the film is an appearance by recovering addict William S. Burroughs a defrocked priest who lectures Matt's character on the dangers of temptation. After a tragedy strikes the gang-Matt's character decides to try to "go straight," but finds that its not the drug that keeps bound, well I won't tell you more in case you decide to watch. PS: the soundtrack has been my favorite 15 years.

Holy WOW, It's been forever since I've seen this one. And, to be honest with you, I can't remember if it's good or not. I've got a strong feeling it is. Besides, it was filmed and based about my home town.

Beauty isn't necessarily as beauty does in this movie about men, women and the search for a love that will last. My favorite scenes, however, involve conversations between the character played by Timothy Hutton (Willie) and that of Natalie Portman (Marty). Natalie, even as a tween, nearly steals the whole show.

For any student who has had to hold down a summer job to make ends meet, this movie is for you. Tempted by gambling and a man who can give him things his father (Hector Elizondo) never even dreamed of having. Beauty and the beach prove to be quite tempting, so how will The Flamingo Kid play the cards he has been dealt? (Oh, also the movie which originated my all time favorite phrase.)
