The Usual Suspects

The Usual Suspects

Great suspense thriller with losts of twists and turns. "The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist." The movie did a great job living up to this key line.

  • I just started watching this show this week and I am so addicted. But be warned, if you thought it was a sitcom, ITS NOT. But so far, I'm loving it.

This film renewed my faith in Denzel Washington and Spike Lee (24th Hour was filled with cathartic projection's of Lee's post 9/11 angst). Lee once again should have received an award for this movie. Denzel Washington, after delivering a string of predictable albeit great performances in mediocre movies, reminds us why he is still the crown bearer (Will Smith, your good but you've got nothing on this guy). This allstar cast also includes Chiwetel Ejiofor, Clive Owen, Jodie Foster and Willem Dafoe.

If I recommend a chick flix thats because its a GOOD movie. And it happens to be oozing with feminist defiance, a dose of tear inducing sentimentality and a healthy portion of girlfriend comraderie. This story is a flashback of the lives of two best friends, how they met in the 1930's and how they committed a very illegal crime and covered it up in a very disturbing and disgusting way. Good movie, a dark twist in the end that you wouldn't expect.

A chilling, amusing and near perfect film with enough quirks and foibles to give the audience a sense of otherworldiness. Film noir set in a rural part of the country and the hero is a very pregnant, tough-as-nails cop. Who else but the Coen Brothers could come up with something like this? I grew up pretty close to North Dakota, just over the border in Saskatchewan. So much about Fargo hit home for me when I first saw it. Saskatchewan winters are just like this, and while the accents where I come from aren't quite as distinctive, they're still very similar.

By 'good' I don't mean cinematic masterpiece. I mean: a) I wasn't mad at it b) I was entertained c) i didn't feel like I had just wasted the last hour and a half Plus, you get to watch acting favs like Depp, Walken and Charles Dutton. The movie is a real time narrative about a guy (Depp) who gets tangled up in an assassination plot of a political figure. Christopher Walken plays the goon thats holding Depp's daughter hostage. If he doesn't kill the politico, his cute lil daughter gets it. yikes.

  • In my opinion, this is Kevin Costner's best movie. It's a classic crime film with everything you'd expect and want: organized crime, gangsters, cops and people getting whacked.

Forget the remake starring Sylvester Stallone (who were they trying to kid, really?). Get Carter is a gritty, tense crime movie, and a classic of British cinema. It still has a tinge of the swinging 60s with its brilliantly evocative soundtrack and inclusion of stars Michael Caine and Britt Ekland. Carter is not a particularly clever but well-dressed thug from London, who is driven by a cold yet inspired revenge when he travels to Newcastle to avenge his brother's death. It's a masterfully told and acted tale, as we follow Carter through the sad and seedy underbelly of working-class Newcastle. Stark and unsettling, it's truly a classic.
