Big Flip Clock/Calendar

Big Flip Clock/Calendar

Everyone loves flip clocks! Or at least things that flip and make clickety-clackity noises. The Big Flip Clock by Karlsson design shows you the time (in analog format), day, date, month and year. It's made out of ABS plastic and plexiglass. This would be a good flip clock for someone who doesn't appreciate the flipping of time cards, but can handle the day card changing every 24 hours or so.

But I like the overall design of this piece. The case is an off-beat octagon (or something...Nonagon maybe? BTW doesn't Nonagon sound like the name of a 2 AM Infomercial product?) and the dial is a nice blend of 3 slate grays', getting darker as you go towards the center. I particularly like the sideways 12, a tiny piece of funky flair on an otherwise simple face. The band is pebbled-leather with hidden lugs, but I would change it (you can) for a more fun color. $120, and the watch is a perfectly proportioned 38 mm in diameter.

This is on ThinkGeek.com?? A classic yet modern watch. Besides the separate and unconventional seconds, hours and minute hands, the middle dial of the watch (which appears black in the photo) actually conceals a regular, clean, hour dot-markers dial. As the second hand rotates, it turns a top, clear plastic piece that's polarized (like your sunglasses). This makes the dial fade from crystal clear, to a darker, darker, twilight shade (hence the name) until it is night-black. Then, 20 seconds (and rotations later) it goes in reverse - from complete darkness to perfect clarity. This goes on and on, dark to light, light to dark. It's jewelry in motion. While how it works might be geeky, it's a modern and surprisingly cool looking watch. The leather band has no visible lugs, so it meets the watch case seamlessly, like a bracelet. The case is made with a sleek, matte aluminum finish. All the marker hands are different shapes. And it's an understated 36 mm in size, letting the watch itself shine without shouting. To truly appreciate the watch in motion, watch the video on their site. $120. UPDATE: Figures this isn't a ThinkGeek exclusive. It's from the Projects Watch Co., by designer Daniel Will-Harris - maker of the also modern and cool 'Reveal' Watch, among others. Check out the included pics for close ups of each phase.

Sleek aluminum design by Reddish studio. Wall mountable and takes 3 AA batteries. $79. For the curious, the basic separate hands idea is not a new one. Watchmaking workshops traditionally have a 'regulator' clock on the wall, one with individual hands for each component of time. This allows for a quick glance at the reference unit so workers can adjust the piece they're working on accordingly.

There is something to be said about bells and whistles. Sure, an alarm clock that awakens you by saying ‘good morning' in five different languages is certainly impressive, but it isn't all that necessary. And honestly, the thing we care about most when it comes to a clock are the numbers. They tell us when we're late, or on time—for once. That's why the numbers clock is so great. Stripped down to the most basic and necessary components, you can stack and rearrange the time as you please.

Best of all is the honeycomb plastic crystal face, which scatters the light and makes the clock and its movements appear pixelated. Expect to see it for sale on the 'Shop for it' website soon.

It's got a white on black digit display (ALWAYS good) with no annoying flashing second thingie. Press the crown in to see the date. Sleek rubber band with a silver-like butterfly clasp. My only complaint is, to keep the sleek, rubber band design, the watch band must be cut to be fitted. So if you cut too much, you will need a new band. You can try this yourself but I recommend going to a professional and warning them in advance.
