Fertile Garden Woodgrain Platter

Fertile Garden Woodgrain Platter

When creating a copper engraving from an existing picture, it was quite common for 18th centuray engravers to attach the image with tacks or small nails to a pin-board in front of the worktable. It is this moment that has been captured in the décor "Woodgrain with Landscapes and Gold Edge". The "sheets" depicting the landscape are partially torn at the edge, as the sheets from which one copied in the workshop would also be worn from repeated use.
