Bombshell Baby Of Bombay -- Bouncing Nightclub Grooves From Bollywood Films 1959 to 1972
Incredible grooves from the Indian film scene -- mod little numbers that are a fair bit different than most Bollywood work that usually shows up on CD! As the title implies, the work here is more in a nightclub mode than a funky one -- and the tunes are a great blend of romping rhythms, electric guitar, and quirky vocals -- all wrapped together in an extremely playful way! The tunes here almost remind us a bit of some of the Japanese soundtrack work we've been stocking from the 60s -- especially in the stark sounds and dramatic use of instrumentation -- and the package here provides some great references for this under-discovered music, by offering up beautiful images from the films, and a wealth of helpful notes! The whole thing's tremendous -- easily one of the best Bollywood sets I've seen -- and titles include "Kati Patang" by RD Burman, "Gumnaam" by Shankar Jakishan, "Kismat" by OP Nayyar, "Loafer" by Laxmikant Pyarelal, "Bluff Master" by Kalyanji Anandji, "Ek Phool Char Kante" by Shankar Jaikishan, and "Hamara Adhikar" by Chitragupta. (Expensive, but an amazing package as well -- very heavy vinyl and cover, with full images throughout, even on the inner sleeves!)

On the other hand, "Lulu" could also be looked at as an audio book, which in someways is more exciting. Still I would love to see how "Lulu" might be translated for the stage or as a silent movie soundtrack.

I love this album, not because William Shatner is the Captain, but because Shatner's tongue-in-cheek vocals are alway filled his trademark melodramatic sincerity that bounce back and forth between beat poetics and comedy. "Seeking Major Tom" could have been grounded by the gravity of the cool pop alternative delivery that performers such as Grace Jones or Lee Hazlewood are known for—and that would have been great, after all guest appearances include Zakk Wylde, Sheryl Crow, Ritchie Blackmore, Lyle Lovett, Steve Miller, Peter Frampton, members of The Strokes, The Kinks, Tangerine Dream, Alice In Chains, Deep Purple, Yes, MC5 and other pop icons—instead Shatner leverages his "Space Cowboy" legacy as a theme for self-parody, which is much more fun. The songs on the "Seeking Major Tom" collection, a bag of sentimental pop-rock standards from the space age are also ripe for for parody, and Shatner makes sure that each one has been spiked with enough ironic moxie to make a Vulcan laugh.

A few years ago I took a second glance at the movie "To Sir, with Love" and was happy to discover the movie is peppered with cool music by Manchester beat group The Mindbenders. Afterwards I went on a music quest for the same sort of sound, I soon entered the world of '60 Garage Punk, and among the nuggets electrified teenage kicks stood The Seeds. Colored in a Blues Psychedelic sound The Seeds have a much harder edge than The Mindbenders, and that worked for me. The Seeds remain one of my favorite bands from this period.

The fact is that when it came to Pat Benatar I always had a chip on my shoulder. You see, I had it in my mind that anyone with a name that rhymes with guitar should be a Punk Rocker. Well, I'm glad Benatar also rhymes with Rock St... The fact is that when it came to Pat Benatar I always had a chip on my shoulder. You see, I had it in my mind that anyone with a name that rhymes with guitar should be a Punk Rocker. Well, I'm glad Benatar also rhymes with Rock Star, cause Pat Benatar has done much to expand the way Rock looks and feels. For me the cadence of her songs are exciting, leaving space open for punctuation as well as surprise. Benatar's music has been the soundtrack to many a romantic ride, and this is not only because of the performances and production on her tracks, but also the storytelling in them. Lastly I've never her another singer put as many different feelings into a spit second. And this is why I can't recommend her Hits, or Greatest Hits albums, because "Ultimate" is what Pat Benatar's sound is all about.
