Remember Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks? Me Too! Over the years they have released albums that were pretty good, but their latest CD has to be one of my favorites! The beauty about "Tangled Tales" is how harmonious the music flows together. It reminds me of the classic Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks, assembling country and blues' greats like David Grisman, Charlie Musselwhite, Roy Rogers, and Bruce Forman, and others! What is my pick of the bounty? Download "A Magician," and you'll see why I love it. His natural, folksy voice draws on the instruments and creates a musical experience you don't often see with today's artists. This song is one I will be holding onto for a long time.

I think what I like most about SUMMVS is that it is neither here nor there, each track feels whole, not too Alva Noto or Ryuichi Sakamoto. Its not overtly electronic or acoustic, it's not purely intellectual or purely melodic, the... Its not overtly electronic or acoustic, it's not purely intellectual or purely melodic, the compositions seem closer to Jazz yet not at all. SUMMVS seems to be about the right touch, the right balance of a collaboration which continues to uncover it's own unique language.

Jose James is one of those young people. The instant you hear his deep, smooth voice you will be hooked. And he is not a Jazz purist sticking strictly to just Jazz in a way that may have killed the genre in it's golden days. By experimenting with the style he is able to lend a Jazz influence to R&B and House styled tracks. He's a busy man with this album just being released in February and another coming in May as well as a few guest appearances. But give this album a purchase or a download and you too will be a Jose junkie.
