I'm a fan of Margaret Leng Tan ever since her initial toy piano CD, “The Art of the Toy Piano”. Here on She Herself Alone: The Art of the Toy Piano 2, Ms. Tan uses no less than six different toy pianos. Some works find the toy piano performed with other instruments including grand piano, toy zithers, music boxes, glockenspiels and percussion, with Ms. Tan as a veritable one-person toy orchestra.

  • Quality, quality album. The best thing about K-Os is his range of musical abilities, from singing, to rapping, to playing multiple instruments. Not your ordinary hip-hop album, Atlantis is upbeat, fresh, and funky.

She's out there, I've been listing to Diamanda Galás since before her first album, and it is always trilling to hear what she has going on. At this writing Diamanda Galás has been on tour in support of her "Guilty Guilty Guilty" album, a thick audio painting exploding boundaries with sophisticated vocal weaponry and raw emotion, Diamanda Galás performs a program of tragic and homicidal love songs and death songs. Beware.

Songs run form popy to rockin and hit so many tones in between. Really a classic Tori album.

Yes I agree "Discord" redefines Ryuichi Sakamoto, and in my own selfish way I would also say that the Ryuichi Sakamoto music from "Discord" onward is the music I've been hoping to hear. "Discord" is a touchstone for a kind of alchemy that only a rare talent enters into, I'd describe it as Jazz abstraction, classical minimalism, or digital acoustic theory. What ever "Discord" might be classified as I feel it should be simply classified as a breakthrough piece.

I missed out on the first half of PJ Harvey's carrier, you know--all that raw guitar, and emotion, and Nick Cave, and NYC, and leg licking, yeah I missed out on all that, sept for one wet make-out session featuring PJ Harvey as the soundtrack, ok maybe that's too much information, anyway I wanted to say something about "White Chalk". Ah, well... "White Chalk" may be my chance to join the cult of Harvey. "White Chalk" is classic in the way most Francois Hardy, Scott Walker and Nico recordings are classic, it's an intimate collection which seems to exist within it's own realm. I'm drawn to the music as it strokes the melancholic and romantic side of melody, but you see I'm one of those who is attracted to the sound of pianos generating introspective atmosphere, fog shrouded streets, nocturnes, and rainy day moods. ah, still more info than you need to know...

Nicolai works directly with the piano sounds, dismantling Sakamoto's recordings with "surgeon-like precision" into micro loops; into their atomic elements. Starting with these sound atoms, he creates a new basis for form, compressing, floating, and rotating rhythm with harmonic sequences and melodic counterpoints, and laying it underneath the piano tracks. This makes insen appear more complex, though the time-stretched flow and the clear lines of the piano stay untouched.
