Under The Covers: Vol. 2: Matthew Sweet & Susanna Hoffs: MP3 Downloads

“As in the first volume of this series, which focused on the 60s, Sweet and Hoffs pay tribute to the 70s with more of their perfectly selected, arranged, and performed covers. While faithful to the originals, these tracks vary in many ways, both in the colors their voices bring to the harmonies and in the styles of guitar work on display. Both performers clearly love the era and the radio singles they sang along to when they were young. Their emotional fidelity is as remarkable as their technical proficiency, and the fact that both have retained their youthful attitudes and voices in middle age (Hoffs is 50!) amazes this aging baby-boomer. Both CDs are a joy to listen to, and we can only hope that the two will give us further volumes devoted to the 80s, when Hoffs' group The Bangles had their heyday, and to the 90s, when Sweet made his commercial breakthrough. I also recommend the bonus tracks that you can download for this album, which include ten more interesting and adventuresome cuts:” – T.Davis “Tom Davis” (Amazon.com Review)

Lara Johnston is clearly on the rise with her powerful voice and fiery, captivating stage presence. Touring tirelessly, Lara Johnston has performed in the United States, Europe and Canada where she has shared the stage or opened for:Michael McDonald, Bonnie Raitt, Steve Miller, Willie Nelson, KISS, Tower of Power, Heart, Sammy Hagar, Huey Lewis, Pablo Cruise, Journey and Cheap Trick. She also won 3rd place in the prestigious BMI Foundation John Lennon Scholarship Competition. Not many 21 year olds can attract the attention of some of the most powerful names in music as Lara has. While Lara generally writes her own songs, she spent months collaborating on her new album with Nashville greats like Producer/songwriter Mike Krompass, and song writers Steve Diamond, Jim McCormick, Tebey and Tommy Lee James. Between the five of them these chart topping songwriters have worked with artists like Taylor Swift, Pixie Lott, David Archuleta, and Orianthi. Their talent and expertise is very influential on Lara’s new album being released later this year. What makes her so captivating, aside from her beauty, is the powerful voice that comes from within her and her ability to perform them effortlessly with a range of influences including Pop, Funk, Gospel, Rock, Jazz and Blues. Perhaps her favorite is Soul music. She was inspired at a young age by Aretha Franklin. She has truly achieved her aspiration and inspiration; to channel Aretha’s powerful, emotional and heartfelt story telling, making Lara the extraordinary artist that she has become. You see, I had it in my mind that anyone with a name that rhymes with guitar should be a Punk Rocker. Well, I'm glad Benatar also rhymes with Rock Star, cause Pat Benatar has done much to expand the way Rock looks and feels. For me the cadence of her songs are exciting, leaving space open for punctuation as well as surprise. Benatar's music has been the soundtrack to many a romantic ride, and this is not only because of the performances and production on her tracks, but also the storytelling in them. Lastly I've never her another singer put as many different feelings into a spit second. And this is why I can't recommend her Hits, or Greatest Hits albums, because "Ultimate" is what Pat Benatar's sound is all about.

The film "Sleepwalking Through The Mekong " not only chronicles the journey taken by Los Angeles based Khmer rock band Dengue Fever (www.myspace.com/denguefevermusic) to lead singer Chhom Nimol’s native Cambodia during the 2005 Water Festival. But also answers a question I've longed to find an answer to, what is this music, where is it from, and how come I have only hear of it recently? The band’s performances there marked the first time a Western band had performed classic 1960s and ‘70s Cambodian rock ‘n’ roll in the country where it was created and nearly erased from existence by the brutal Pol Pot regime. More than a rockumentary, the film serves up a portrait of modern Cambodia as the band tours through Phnom Penh and beyond, crossing a great cultural chasm with the same spirit of Cambodia’s original rock pioneers. DVD bonus material includes a biography of the band Dengue Fever, live performance segments, comments from director John Pirozzi, segments on the Cambodian Water Festival, the traditional Cambodian Coconut Dance and Cambodia’s Master Musicians. The accompanying CD soundtrack includes classic tracks from Cambodian artists Ros Serey Sothea, Sinn Sisamouth and Meas Samoun, as well as original material created by Cambodian master musicians Tep Mary and Kong Nai with Dengue Fever, and previously unreleased Dengue Fever instrumental tracks “March of The Balloon Animals” and “Phnom Chisor Serenade”.

But I was very pleasantly surprised by this collection as each artist (all very skilled and true artists) made each track their own. They made them new again. The songs kept their original flavor, while bringing something new, whether it was singing in a different key, adding harmonies, adding riffs, or giving the song a new feel. My favorite was Kevon Edmonds' rendition of "Never Let You Down." It was so good, I think that might have to be my wedding song someday! Kem's rendering of "Golden Time of Day" sent chills down my spine. I loved the new feel added to Musiq's "Silky Soul" and "I Wanna Thank You" with The Clark Sisters. Raheem DeVaughn knocked me out with his vocals on "We Are One," and Ledisi proved why she is a true artist and a powerful singer on "Happy Feelins." Mint Condition, the only band on the LP, turned in a solid performance that paid tribute to the old while making it new, while Joe and Avant were smooth on their tracks. The only track I wasn't impressed with was Mary J. Blige's "Before I Let Go." That's a hard song to remake and have people accept, but Mary didn't even sound like she was trying. But the song is not unbearable. This CD was so good, I HAD to write a review!”– J Double U (Amazon.com Review)

Several tracks, such as “The Invader” and “Primetime Hero” are all an '80s rock lover could ever want — and these two tracks really stand out on the album in terms of “seriousness.” Several other titles, like “Pump Energy Man” and “Power US” also stand out — but more so due to their extreme nuttiness if nothing else (are we really supposed to take hard rock songs about eating and exercising right seriously?).” - Luigi Bastardo
