Ordinary People

Mary Tyler Moore blew me away with her performance as the distant, cold-hearted mother in this movie. Knowing her only as the buoyant Mary of "The Mary Tyler Moore Show", I was even more chilled by her character's inability to connect with anyone but herself. And although Timothy Hutton's struggles are primarily psychological, he makes them almost tangible through his vibrant and honest portrayal of a young man who has lost sight of what he wants from life . . . and if he really wants to live.

Man, I must have been 14 when I caught this movie on TV and I was riveted! That means a lot considering (from what I remember) this movie is a dialogue heavy film that takes place entirely in an apartment. (This MUST have been a stage play or something) Anyway, a soldier comes home to his two parents embroiled in bitter marital strife. Older and somewhat wiser, the young man begins see things clearly as he pieces together from his childhood memories of a marriage he witnessed deteriorating long before he came home from service. Oh, and the soldier is played by a 27 year-old Martin Sheen. Astounding film! I love it!
