It is handmade and hand carved a very useful and interesting utensil that is not only decorative but also highly efficient. Use it to pound garlic, ginger, whole black pepper, or any other spices.

It's not the same huge stone mortar and pestle set that Paul Child bought as a gift for Julia Child when she started her cooking career in France, but it is porcelain and will get the crushing work done.

I am a complete sucker for a beautifully simple piece of wood. Give me a gorgeous wooden bowl any day and you will make me happy. I smiled when I first saw the Small Pestle and Mortar. I smiled when I first saw the Small Pestle and Mortar. The contrast between the chunky base and the smooth ceramic ball are fantastic. So pure, so simple. I might never use it for its intended purpose - it can stand on the counter as a piece of kitchen sculpture. The price is quite extraordinary too! $20!
