Gifted: Women of the World ~ Various Artists

A well composed introduction to the expansive world of female voice featuring a stunning handful of artists who's craft (often so rich in classical training) pushes past conventional description. Note: A portion of the proceeds from album sales go to WITNESS, a group cofounded by Peter Gabriel that equips human rights advocates with modern technology such as video cameras to further their causes

Exposure contains a kind of unspoken darkness within Fripp's choice of song structure, instrumentation and vocalists. The result is a series of music acts which twitch inside a skin of hybrid jazz-pop lotion, often transcending the 80's sound-picture into a kind of jazz vocal daisy chain, and yet always collapsing back into it. I happen to like the sound of alienation from time to time, Exposure dose it for me. Noteworthy tracks: You Burn Me Up I'm A Cigarette North Star Exposure Here Comes The Flood NY3

In the age when Lady GaGa rules Pop Music, it's trilling to have Yeasayer's Odd Blood flowing through the speakers. For me Odd Blood brings impressions of a distant place of FM music where bands like 10cc, young Elton John, Todd Rungern, Peter Gabriel and Oingo Boingo once stood. I don't mean to take any of the credit away from Yeasayer masterful uplifting work, but rather acknowledge that Odd Blood belongs to several eras, nicely done.

  • Yes, here comes the flood. Just a piano and The Gabriel. A great, gushy, reflective song by the man who puts out an album every seven years. Now that's scrutiny!

While previously known more for his compositions for the trendsetting world music group Ancient Future, this first solo effort features his improvisational music. As leader of the world music group Ancient Future, Matthew Montfort has devoted himself to the scalloped fretboard guitar since 1978. He spent years of study with some of the world’s best musicians, such as gamelan director K.R.T. Wasitodipuro, North Indian sarod master Ali Akbar Khan, and vina master K.S. Subramanian, with whom he did an intensive study of South Indian note-bending techniques. Montfort wrote the book “Ancient Traditions – Future Possibilities: Rhythmic Training Through the Traditions of Africa, Bali, and India,” which has been used by many musicians to improve their rhythm skills.

This is the perfect gift if you are looking for a present for either men or women ages 28-65. Anyone who likes rock, ambient music, drums-n-bass, world music, new age, practices yoga or meditation and is a fan of Cocteau Twins, Dead Can Dance, Clannad, David Sylvain, Greg Ellis, Enya, Loreena McKennit, Loreena McKnight or Lisbeth Scott, will love this CD! Biomusique is Lisbeth Scott & Greg Ellis' band - they are like the dream duo instrumentalist and vocalist. I originally got hooked when I loved the music so much from Chronicles of Narnia so much, I checked into who did the soundtrack and found this CD by from BIOMUSIQUE - 10,000 steps. Its by Lisbeth Scott & Greg Ellis - they have both contributed on so many soundtracks like Chronicles, Ironman,. Passion of the Christ, Lord of the Rings, 300 Gladiators and so many more. It has a really unique feeling to it...very calming and passionate with a wicked beat!!

Although this album is the soundtrack of the movie "Passion", I remember it best as the musical accompaniment to the multimedia modern dance extravaganza performed by the dance troupe "Momix". The dance incorporated a constantly changing array of stage-size photographs, representing the full range of human experience: love, hate, war, unity, passion, lassitude and, above all, beauty. This music is a mirror of both my experience in that theater and as a person. (Catch "Momix" at The Joyce Theatre in NYC now through June 8, 2008.)

By far the most compelling live performance I have ever seen is that of Peter Gabriel on tour for the album "So". I had no clue how wide and deep his musical history was but I learned and experienced so much in that two hours that I can honestly say he is a great teacher as well as an amazing performer. And my favorite song became one I had never heard before: "Biko". It was the last song he played. As it drew to a close, the musicians left the stage one by one until only Peter was standing. By then, the audience had taken up the tune and the entire stadium was singing. How powerful music can be !
