KCRW 89.9FM

Thank GOODNESS KCRW streams their station online. Now, anyone can listen to the greatest. radio. station. ever. For my money (which we also give every year) noone is better than Ann Lit and Garth Trinidad spinning the tunes. And of course, everyone wants to marry Nic Harcourt.

Ok maybe 'not so much' when it comes to me. I was, after all, recently spotted making the dreaded "rock on" hand signal while failing entirely to find the beat on the dance floor. Sigh. I can't cover ALL the bases ALL of the time. Fine. The truth. "Hello, my name is Fiona and I can't dance. Well, except the jig." So I'm focusing my expertise on keeping up with the musicians since the beat gave me the finger and ran away years ago. I use Ministry of Sound's 24/7 radio not only for personal enterainment but also as musical Cliff Notes to see what's up and who's up and coming. And, it could be said, to hear the songs I will NOT be dancing to. Shh.. don't tell anyone I'm really not that cool. Well except for the people who saw me dancing. They already know that.

Who really wants to hear some 90 year old DJ drone on and on about what's apparantly "hot" these days with the youngsters followed by five minutes of incomprehensible cell phone commercials. Podcasts are where its at (despite the lameness of the term 'where its at'). With this Podcast kit from U Cast, you can a use a USB microphone, headphones, sound editing software, and easy to follow directions to get your radio show to all the people's iPods and computers who want to hear good, original music without the cellphone plan details.

Or if you're craving more, you can download shows from iTunes. I find that the format is perfect for listening to on the way to work. Each episode is just about an hour long and is composed of three stories which are in some way linked. While the program does suffer for a tad of the preciousness that is NPR, it is distinctly enjoyable and almost always thought provoking.
