Kiss of the Beast: From Paris Salon to King Kong

My faviorite bit of "Kiss of the Beast" is it's many film stills from famous big ape and monster movies including King Kong, Frankenstein and Creature from the Black Lagoon as well as posters, sculptures, paintings, print and rare books. The book is published in conjunction with "Kiss of the Beast", an integrated exhibition and film program presented by the Australian Cinematheque, Queensland Art Gallery.

Cute, fun, goofy, retro, up-to-the-minute, oversized, undersized, nostalgic, utterly useless but cannot live without, gross, crafty, environmentally responsible and simply fabulous - that is only the beginning of the online curiosity shop (and now brick-and-mortar Brooklyn darling) that is Fred Flare. And now the wild and crazy guys, Keith and Chris, behind the scenes have recorded their first single, oh-so-aptly named "sparkle pop." You human sparklers are the online equivalent of the Candy Man. Looking forward to more even more ebullience in the coming decade . . . making people smile is no small thing.

Then, the dream grew closer to our human reality in film. And now, at the dawn of the new decade, we get to physically climb inside the world of Harry Potter. See it now at the Museum of Science, Boston. And, in a few months, take the experience for a faster, more complete spin at Universal Orlando's "The Wizarding World of Harry Potter." Which doesn't adequately explain any of our fabulous misadventures growing up. Jon Scieszka (author of "The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales") has a really good excuse: five brothers. Quite generously and with great humor, he shares much of his childhood guts and glory in this novella. Fair warning: this is the kind of material that will make you laugh out loud, involuntarily and repeatedly. Most fun I have ever had while reading this past decade.

I have to love the man who regularly puts my hometown on the map during his weekday weather reports. But Al Roker has greatly exceeded all of my expectations in the last decade, becoming a huge advocate of literacy, lending his voice to the animation of "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs," and, most recently, co-authoring a comedy-mystery tale of morning television. Up next: his inside take on the Winter Games in Vancouver . . .

The immense collection, assembled in this catalog, represented the personal property and contents of Michael Jackson’s private amusement park and family residence to be sold during a live auction, televised and real-time online auction broadcast by Auction Network during the spring of 2009, needless to say, it was one of the most anticipated auctions in history. But, Julien's "Michael Jackson Auction" was closed down before it could open.

Many times I wished that someone would make the Maggie and Hopey story into a movie, but then I think it's better in the hands of Jaime Hernandez. Locas tells the story of Maggie Chascarrillo, a bisexual, Mexican-American woman attempting to define herself in a community rife with class, race and gender issues. Locas: The Maggie and Hopey Stories was created over 15 years from 1981 to 1996 in the pages of the legendary comic book series Love and Rockets. Maggie's story begins in the early-1980s Southern California rock scene, when it was shifting from the excesses of the 1970s to the gritty basics of punk and new wave. Hardcore punk rock came to the fore, and the teenaged Maggie finds herself drawn to the anarchy, energy and diversity of the scene, which in Jaime's hands becomes a very real, habitable place populated with authentic human beings rather than stereotypes. She quickly befriends Hopey Glass, a feisty anti-authoritarian punkette who quickly becomes Maggie's on-again, off-again lover and a constant presence in her life throughout the book.
