Long-term unemployment, I’m now convinced, rewires something in your brain. There’s a constant, low-burning state of anxiety and foreboding that never goes away. It’s not that there’s never any good news. You find a way to make the car payment, when it seemed impossible days earlier. You actually go on a job interview. Or maybe the bank gives you a few extra days to pay your home equity loan. Whatever. The problem is that these small victories almost always seem to be accompanied by reminders of how dire your situation truly is.
