Sonic Youth, I love everything they record. Personally I feel all their recordings are a soundtrack in some way.

Miles Davis is one of the most important figures in the history of jazz and music proper. It's impossible to imagine the world of jazz without Davis and the gorgeous, silver sound of his trumpet playing. Davis' recordings not only defined popular jazz of the second half of the 20th century, he also redefined the genre with far-reaching fusion experiments. But Davis' thirst for music and adventure didn't stop there, as he journeyed ever onward into the gritty world of urban funk and even commercial pop before he was through. In Davis' mind, there were only two types of music: good and bad. It's a difficult task to capture that idea in a headphone, but that's what the Miles Davis Tribute Headphones do. Although the Miles Davis Tributes are designed with Miles and to present the tones and tunes of jazz music with faithful fidelity, they also excel with all types of music – and there's a lot of good music to be heard! A sound as pure, emotional and revolutionary as the man himself, the Miles Davis Tribute Headphones offer not only the ultimate jazz experience but one across all musics. We trust Miles would approve.

Souad Massi's "Raoui" came out at a time when I wanted to return to non-American music, but I was looking for something that sounded complete, something with soul, something that was going to take me deeper into contemporary music without gimmicks. I listened to a stack of albums in the "World Music" section at the Virgin Mega Store and after nearly abandoning my search I came across the inspired talent of Souad Massi from Algeria. Souad Massi's sound is sometimes described as Algerian folk/rock, this maybe somewhat true, I'm not sure what to call it. I'm attracted to her lamentful ballads as well as her more urgent themes. Description Debut album by Algerian vocalist who is based in Paris. Thealbum fuses North African styles with western pop and folk, utilising both the acoustic guitar and the oud. Massi composed each of the songs and delivers them in either French or Arabic.

The music on this album reflects the social and historical forces at work during the closedown of the '60s dream; music made by close-knit collectives and individual visionaries, by prisoners and eccentrics, by mystics and political radicals. It includes music by acknowledged masters, and moments of brilliance by unsung figures known to us from just one or two recordings. There are songs from prison bands, Egyptian big bands, high school jazz ensembles, African musicians gigging with free jazz legends, and African American jazz heroes.

I'd like to thank Dengue Fever for putting names and faces to Cambodian rock and roll history. My first exposure to Cambodian rock was in a restaurant when I was too young to ask what was playing. It was many years later that I found friends in New York who love Cambodian rock but wasn't sure who made it and where to find more. For those of you who haven't yet tasted Cambodian rock Electric Cambodia is a perfect introduction to the music. Chosen by the members of Dengue Fever from their collection of rare Cambodian cassettes. "Shave Your Beard" by Ros Sereysothea has been recorded by Dengue Fever and is a staple in their live set. This music was recorded in the 1960s and early '70s soon after Cambodia became an independent nation. It was a period of rapid modernization that not only influenced music, but also architecture, sculpture, painting, dance, and cinema. For many, it was Cambodia's own artistic renaissance, a time pointing to a hopeful future. This golden era came to a sudden end when the Khmer Rouge took control of the country in 1975 and brutally attempted to destroy any trace of modern society. Sadly, while many of the recordings of modern Cambodian rock and roll survived, most of the artists who created it did not. Over the last decade Dengue Fever has culled this compilation of their favorite Cambodian rock and roll from many different cassette tapes. The great music you'll find here is a testament to the spirit of a modern Cambodia that existed not so long ago, and should be remembered today.

Wendy Carlos's Switched-On Bach is one of those rare novelty recordings that never gets boring. In the capable hands of Carlos, Bach's keyboard masterpieces sound like they were made for the otherworldly blurps, farts, and chimes of a Moog synthesizer. And, in a sense, they were. Bach's inventive music doesn't lose any of it's contrapuntal punch in these complicated arrangements and, novelties aside, the playing is great on this Grammy Award-winning classic. Whether performing Bach's "Two-Part Inventions," "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring," or "Wachet Auf," Carlos offers one-of-a-kind interpretations, her synthesizers still sounding as otherworldly as they did in 1968. This is one of those weird and wonderful classical releases that anyone--classical scholar or pop enthusiast--can enjoy. A Switched-On box set exists, capturing most of Carlos's baroque-gone-berserk output, but this is the disc that started it all. In a word, fun. --Jason Verlinde
