Souad Massi's "Raoui" came out at a time when I wanted to return to non-American music, but I was looking for something that sounded complete, something with soul, something that was going to take me deeper into contemporary music without gimmicks. I listened to a stack of albums in the "World Music" section at the Virgin Mega Store and after nearly abandoning my search I came across the inspired talent of Souad Massi from Algeria. Souad Massi's sound is sometimes described as Algerian folk/rock, this maybe somewhat true, I'm not sure what to call it. I'm attracted to her lamentful ballads as well as her more urgent themes. Description Debut album by Algerian vocalist who is based in Paris. Thealbum fuses North African styles with western pop and folk, utilising both the acoustic guitar and the oud. Massi composed each of the songs and delivers them in either French or Arabic.

I'd like to thank Dengue Fever for putting names and faces to Cambodian rock and roll history. My first exposure to Cambodian rock was in a restaurant when I was too young to ask what was playing. It was many years later that I found friends in New York who love Cambodian rock but wasn't sure who made it and where to find more. For those of you who haven't yet tasted Cambodian rock Electric Cambodia is a perfect introduction to the music. Chosen by the members of Dengue Fever from their collection of rare Cambodian cassettes. "Shave Your Beard" by Ros Sereysothea has been recorded by Dengue Fever and is a staple in their live set. This music was recorded in the 1960s and early '70s soon after Cambodia became an independent nation. It was a period of rapid modernization that not only influenced music, but also architecture, sculpture, painting, dance, and cinema. For many, it was Cambodia's own artistic renaissance, a time pointing to a hopeful future. This golden era came to a sudden end when the Khmer Rouge took control of the country in 1975 and brutally attempted to destroy any trace of modern society. Sadly, while many of the recordings of modern Cambodian rock and roll survived, most of the artists who created it did not. Over the last decade Dengue Fever has culled this compilation of their favorite Cambodian rock and roll from many different cassette tapes. The great music you'll find here is a testament to the spirit of a modern Cambodia that existed not so long ago, and should be remembered today.

The music on this album reflects the social and historical forces at work during the closedown of the '60s dream; music made by close-knit collectives and individual visionaries, by prisoners and eccentrics, by mystics and political radicals. It includes music by acknowledged masters, and moments of brilliance by unsung figures known to us from just one or two recordings. There are songs from prison bands, Egyptian big bands, high school jazz ensembles, African musicians gigging with free jazz legends, and African American jazz heroes.

Wendy Carlos's Switched-On Bach is one of those rare novelty recordings that never gets boring. In the capable hands of Carlos, Bach's keyboard masterpieces sound like they were made for the otherworldly blurps, farts, and chimes of a Moog synthesizer. And, in a sense, they were. Bach's inventive music doesn't lose any of it's contrapuntal punch in these complicated arrangements and, novelties aside, the playing is great on this Grammy Award-winning classic. Whether performing Bach's "Two-Part Inventions," "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring," or "Wachet Auf," Carlos offers one-of-a-kind interpretations, her synthesizers still sounding as otherworldly as they did in 1968. This is one of those weird and wonderful classical releases that anyone--classical scholar or pop enthusiast--can enjoy. A Switched-On box set exists, capturing most of Carlos's baroque-gone-berserk output, but this is the disc that started it all. In a word, fun. --Jason Verlinde

Given the quirkiness of Neil Young's recording career, with its frequent cancellations of releases and last-minute rearrangements of material, it is a relief to report that this two-disc compilation is so conventional and so satisfying. A 35-track selection of the best of Young's work between 1966 and 1976, it includes songs performed by Buffalo Springfield, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, and the Stills-Young Band, as well as solo work. In addition to five unreleased songs, Decade offers such key tracks as the Springfield's "Mr. Soul," "Broken Arrow," and "I Am a Child"; "Sugar Mountain," a song that had appeared only as a single before; "Cinnamon Girl," "Down by the River," and "Cowgirl in the Sand" from Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere; "Southern Man" and the title track from After the Gold Rush; and "Old Man" and the chart-topping "Heart of Gold" from Harvest. This is the material that built Young's reputation between 1966 and 1972, although he is more idiosyncratic with the later material, including the blockbusters "Like a Hurricane" and "Cortez the Killer" but mixing in more unreleased recordings as the set draws to a close. He seems intent on making the album a listenable one that will appeal to a broad base of fans, and he succeeds despite the exclusion of much of the harrowing work of 1973-1975. Nevertheless, the album is an ideal sampler for new listeners, and since there is no one-disc Young compilation covering any significant portion of his career, this lengthy chronicle is the place to start. ~ William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide « less… more »

From his first explosion of recordings in the mid-'50s, Yusef Lateef was a player who was always gently stretching the boundaries of his music to absorb techniques, new rhythms, and new influences from Africa, the Middle East and Asia. The Centaur and the Phoenix, however, takes the risks and the innovations that Lateef was known for, and expands them in a number of different directions all at once, leading to an album that bursts with new ideas and textures, while remaining accessible, and above all, beautiful. Lateef seems eager here to take the next step musically by breaking the mold of his previous albums. While he is a gifted composer, only a third of the songs featured here are his work: the rhythm-driven flute showcase "Apathy," the gentle, nocturnal tribute to his daughter "Iqbal" and the tone poem "The Philanthropist." The best of the rest come from Kenny Barron, who was only 17 at the time, and Charles Mills, a contemporary classical composer who drew the album's self-titled highlight from two of his symphonies, the first paying tribute to Crazy Horse and the other to Charlie Parker. Providing the structure and textures needed for these intricate compositions was Lateef's largest ensemble to date. Accustomed to working in a small-group format, he makes managing a band of nine sidemen seem easy. Several Lateef regulars are here, including Barry Harris, Richard Williams, and Ernie Farrow, but the inclusion of forward-thinking musicians like Joe Zawinul also help take this album to a higher level. The greatest miracle of this recording, however, is the balance that Lateef achieves with this large group -- they are always an asset, never a distraction, and even as they come on strong and powerful on songs like "Apathy," or Barron's arrangement of "Ev'ry Day (I Fall in Love)" he remains in charge, somehow making his delicate flute (or oboe, tenor sax or argol) rise above it all, spilling out brightness, grace and joy. ~ Stacia Proefrock, All Music Guide « less… more »

During the time Live in Brooklyn was recorded, Vermont's fantastic four had decided to call it quits, again, after two decades playing together with a small "breakup" lodged in between. So there was more than a little melancholy surrounding what was to be the band's absolute, unquestionable, no-looking-back, there-will-never-be-a-summer-tour-ever-again final tour. Even lead singer/guitarist Trey Anastasio, during a lengthy interview with Guitar World, claimed that it would take a lot to get the group back together and move forward, simply because he doesn't want to turn into one of those nostalgic jam bands. Whatever the case may be, the group has since offered several archive releases to pacify the hordes of fans wanting to relive the magic, Live in Brooklyn among those releases. For anyone who followed the group throughout the tour (either online or in person), they already know Phish offered up some of their most expansive and energetic sets of the past ten years and the Brooklyn shows (featuring guest cameos not included in this three-CD set) were no exception. No member of the group is resting on his laurels, as the band plays with renewed energy and confidence and even brings out some of their oldest, rarely performed material (check the amazing version of "The Curtain With") for the long goodbye. So until that much speculated reunion and Phish 3.0 comes along, this will have to appease the die-hard fanatics looking for high-quality recordings. It does the job and does it well. ~ Rob Theakston, All Music Guide « less… more »
