Giro Fuse Helmet

Helmets save livs... Wear one! It's one wo easily hurt yourself. (Also, I love mine because it has the Red Bull logo on it!)

  • I may be going on a ski trip (in Jan) for the first time in my adult life. I got this at REI for $90. I think it was a good buy since I have zero cold weather performance gear. Got the jacket and pants covered in one fell swoop.

  • What makes this great is the eVent fabric REI chose to use for this wonderful jacket. Get hot easy? This jacket actually breathes!!! I used to have to hike with no rain protection since gore-tex generally gets too hot.

  • I love this jacket! It's perfect for me (only I like the white one) because it's funky and fun! I don't really snowboard, but I do like to snowshoe. This is the perfect jacket for that.

  • I love snowboarding jackets. I don't snowboard however. But snowboarding jackets are much more fashionable and warm than ski jackets. If you're looking for a good jacket for winter, this one will look great and keep you warm!

Meant to send out a beacon when you are caught in an avalanche, this transceiver recieves those signals and actually points you to the people buried in the snow.

It's always better to lock your stuff up when leaving things in public areas. The DaKine Cam Lock is a solid ski/snowboard lock (though it can be used on anything from computer monitors to bikes). Its wire is thicker than most other locks in this category, and it has a 4 digit combination lock, as opposed to a measly three. (This way, thieves will have to try 10K number combinations as opposed to an easy 999 :D ) The 'cam' feature allows you to loop the wire, and the lock, over itself, allowing you to secure awkwardly shaped items (snowboards come to mind). Comes in a nice pouch that's easy to carry around.

It's kind of scary snowboarding down a big mountain like Shasta with a steep point inches from your ear. You generally strap an ice axe onto your pack when you snowboard down a big mountain, and this guard will make that safer. Even if you carry the axe while snowboarding this guard might still be a good idea as long as it comes off effortlessly during a fall.

  • These poles will help keep you upright when you are snowshoeing. I like the fact that they telescope so that you can minimize them and strap them to your back if you are snowboarding or skiing back down the hill.

However if I'm doing some backcountry, a small pack is going to be necessary. I've had my Heli-Pro for about 10 years now, and it looks like little has changed (except the addition of some truly hideous color schemes, but basic black is still available). I also use this pack as an international travel pack for my camera, it's just the right size for a camera and tripod if you aren't carrying too many lenses. This pack could also be used for ultralight backpacking, but then you'd probably want to choose one of those ultralight packs to put your little bit of ultralight gear in.

Don't get a small rack if you have an SUV, at some point there's going to be 4 of you in there, unless you're such a poser that nobody will ride with you. This rack adapts to most SUV factory rails.

This pair has a nice long gauntlet which is necessary to prevent a gaper's gap between the mittens and jacket, and it has removable liners making it useful for a wider temperature range, and for laundering.

You need the right avalanched safety equipment to travel this country safely, and an avalanche transceiver is the cornerstone of this equipment.
