Sycamore Mineral Springs

Sycamore Mineral Springs

I spent a few days at Sycamore Springs resort in San Luis Obispo around this time last year, which was one of the most beautifully amazing getaways of my life. Sycamore Springs is known for their mineral baths - they have lots of jacuzzi-sized outdoor tubs that are nestled into the hillside, and the water's really rich in sulfur (good for your respiratory system and your skin - in fact, after about a half-hour in the tub, all the blemishes on my chin were cleared away). I got a delicious ayurvedic facial (during which my aesthetitian poured hot oil onto my scalp - yummm...), had a chakra-balancing energy treatment, walked the labyrinth, and went on a fabulous hike up the hillside and over to the ocean (sooo gorgeous). The lodging's also divine: I had a lovely, roomy cottage with a fireplace and a back deck that included my own private spring-water hot tub, and during the evenings I'd soak in the tub while reading books and eating Dove chocolate bars. Pure heaven. I can't wait to go back again someday.

If your daily schedule changes frequently, if you do a lot of traveling, or if you just have difficulty falling asleep, this is what you need. Melatonin is a naturally occurring brain chemical that tells your body it's time to recharge. Sometimes people have deficiencies of this chemical and this results in insomnia. Just take one tablet about an hour before you plan to sleep, and sure enough your eyes will get heavy and you'll want to go rest.

I bought one of these on a whim in a gift store and love it so much that when i lost one while on holiday (i forgot it in the bedsheets!) i HAD to order another one as I just slept so much better with it. These are very soft on the face, and because they tie at the back there's no tightness around the face or lines when you wake up. The Lavendar scent helps when i'm on a plane and feeling a bit stressed to sleep, and it blocks out ALL the light becasue it covers around the eyes, not just the eyes. My Holly Golightly sleep 'must'.

This portable hammock sets up in seconds with no tools required! No more looking for the perfect pair of trees to tie a hammock up in between (as if I have ever done that), this hammock has everything you need all wrapped up in a tidy carrying case. The frame is made from steel, folds up and sets up easily, and provides you with summer relaxation wherever you go. I would love this for camping and Burning Man.

With natural hot springs, ancient Roman ruins (including a 12,000 seat Roman Theater), and a petrified (limestone) waterfall, Pamukkale is as stunning a place as there is on this earth. The naturally hot (96 degrees F) springs are pristine, and some have incredible bonuses: Ancient Roman columns and other ruins exist, perfectly preserved, at depths of 10 to 15 feet. The local hotels (and don't think skyscrapers; rather, think posh motor lodges) are built right on the springs, which gives the image of "springs as hotel pools" that makes them so easy to enjoy. If you can tear yourself out of the water, Pamukkale (which means "Cotton Castle" in Turkish) has a "petrified" waterfall, a chalk-and-limestone formation that looks like steps that reach down nearly 800 feet vertically, and each step is actually a pool of water resting in the formation. Again, I can't do the place justice -- you have to look at the pictures for yourselves. Also, the ruins of the ancient Roman city Hierapolis are located just next to the springs. There are guided tours, or you can just wander at your own pace. Travel to Pamukkale is straightforward, but the trip can be long. Travel from the East Coast & Midwestern United States takes roughly 18 hours spread over three flights, and can take up to a full day from the West Coast. The flights aren't terribly expensive; expect to pay $2,000 per passenger round-trip, $2,500 from the West Coast. I recommend taking Lufthansa into Frankfurt, and then from Frankfurt to Istanbul (3 hours). From there, Turkish Airlines flies from Istanbul to Denizli (1 hour.) Buses then ferry you the last 15 miles to Pamukkale. Once there, fortunately, prices are ridiculously cheap. Single rooms go for as low as $60 a day, while the best rooms in the best hotels don't reach any higher than about $140 (depending on the strength of the dollar). The food in Turkey is some of the best in the world, in my opinion. Lamb is a staple, and various kebabs and Mediterranean salads served locally are just outstanding. Iskender kebab, my personal favorite, is pita bread soaked in yogurt with a hint of tomato sauce, covered with thinly sliced lamb, garnished with tomatoes and parsley, and covered (at your option) in melted butter, with hot peppers on the side, for those of you who are more adventurous. I try to eat Turkish food once a week, but it's a bear because I have to drive about an hour each way into Georgetown (DC) to get authentic Turkish food. Of course, it's worth it, and I'd probably go if it were a two-hour drive each way. Another bonus -- if you can get up early in the morning -- is fresh-baked bread. If you like piping-hot bread at 4:30 in the morning, you're in for a real treat: Turkish bread (ekmek) is delicious, preservative-free, and quite frankly, worth killing for. Eat it plain, put any type of butter or jelly on it, or scoop out the insides of the loaves and make a giant sandwich; you can't go wrong with ekmek. Ever. I recommend at least a one-week stay - preferably two - to make it worth your while, especially with the long travel times. If you're going to shell out the $5,000 it takes to fly a couple of people there, you might as well stay an extra week for the (average) $200 a day it costs to get out and do & see everything you want to see. Trust me, you won't run out of things to do. Pamukkale is my favorite travel destination in the world, and #1 on my list of "Places to visit before you die."

Ever since visiting Devil's Thumb Ranch in Tabernash, Colorado, this past September, I've been dreaming of going back sometime in the not-very-distant future. I'd never been to Colorado before and fell in love with the mountains and those wide open spaces everyone always muses about. My cabin was fantastic, a loft furnished with beautiful wooden pieces that you could tell were lovingly selected. At the spa I had a hot stone massage and facial, both of which were some of the most fabulous spa treatments I'd ever received (especially the hot stone - this is something everyone truly *must* experience at some point in his/her life). And I rode a horse and ate antelope, both first-time experiences that I found exciting, slightly scary, and ultimately wonderful. My fantasy is to somehow be whisked away to Devil's Thumb this winter, despite the fact that I don't even ski or snowshoe: I want to go back for more hot stone and lounging by the cabin's fireplace and indulging in so much great food and wine in the restaurant and staring awestruck at the mountains and also for the wintertime sleigh rides, which sound absolutely magic.
