New England Biolabs

I've been using restriction enzymes from New England Biolabs (NEB) for as long as I can remember. There are two reasons to use NEB enzymes: the quality of the enzymes and the quality of the technical information provided. I've known people who worked in R&D for other companies who also made restriction enzymes and they still used NEB's products. The company philosophy seems to be make good stuff and make it easy to use. They catalog, both online and print, is something I refer to frequently. It has solid information about the enzymes and their peculiarities - something another company wouldn't be so forthcoming about. If an enzyme doesn't have great activity, it might still be in the catalog, but you know that it doesn't have great activity before you buy it.

It's not a candid shot of you role playing or the coveted baby photo. The custom DNA portrait is actually a photo of your completely unique DNA. For Valentines Day, there's few things more (geeky) romantic than pointing out how your loved one truly is one-of-a-kind.

DNA sequencing tends to get done by core facilities at most institutions, but if you're in the New York/New Jersey area and you need sequencing done, you couldn't do better than Genewiz. You give them miniprep quality DNA and they give you sequence. Results are emailed to you quickly and even on Saturdays. So now your boss can legitimately call you on Saturday and ask about those clones. Oh joy! They have two speeds, fast and faster: "Standard Service - Data reported within one business day after samples are delivered to GENEWIZ. Same Day Service - Data reported by 5pm EST the same day samples are delivered to GENEWIZ (by 10 am EST). Up to 94 samples per order, in most cases an additional charge applies." I try not to pimp too many companies associated with my work, but these guys really do rock. When I was asking around for recommendations for a company to do sequencing, theirs was the only name that came up.

This just looks fun to read: We share 98% DNA with gorillas, and apparently, there’s a lot we could learn from them. For one, gorillas in the wild eat better than most of us; we’d do well to ape their diet, a little bit. The book even has a menu guide! Nearly Human waxes lyrical about all things gorilla, from nonviolent parenting techniques to peaceful conflict resolution to interactive play, that humans could emulate. Other gorilla info’s less applicable to humans — i.e. a step-by-step illustrated guide to the 9-step chest beating display — if amusing.

It takes your sequence files, trims them and aligns them, and then displays them in an easy to use format. Do you have a base you're not sure of, then you can take a look at the chromatograph merely by hitting a button. Aligning sequence with lots of gaps? It can do it easily. As they say on their website, "Sequencher is the industry standard." Another side of Gene Codes is their involvement with remains identification from the World Trade Center. They created new technology to assist with this and continue to do so while shying from media attention.

You put 1.5ml of bacterial culture in and you get plasmid DNA out. Reliable, quick, and easy enough to teach to your ten year old kid, as long as they don't try to drink any of the reagents. The DNA that comes out of them is clean enough to sequence immediately, or digest or transform, some people even transfect it.
