His work is exhibited in many prominent collections including the Renwick Gallery of American Crafts at the Smithsonian Institution, the Corning Museum of Glass, The Toledo Museum of Art, The Carnegie Museum of Art, The Mint Museum, The Cleveland Museum of Art, The Museum of American Glass at Wheaton Village , and the Pilchuck Glass School.

Oh my. I love contrasting material and content. Trees are wood, alive and sometimes fluid. Metal is cold, hard and man-made with little movement, yet this lovely artist used it to create life.

I ran into this artist at the last St Louis Rock and Roll Craft Fair and just fell in love with her use of retro designs on all of her pottery. The shapes may be more modern on some of the serving vessels but they still have that... I ran into this artist at the last St Louis Rock and Roll Craft Fair and just fell in love with her use of retro designs on all of her pottery. The shapes may be more modern on some of the serving vessels but they still have that retro feel with the patters. My personal favorite are those featuring the "starburst" pattern.

I've seen this piece in person and it is almost three feet tall and super gorgeous! It's really more of a sculpture than a vase, very sexy and slender in the middle. Ildikó Kalapács was born in Hungary and has been living in the USA since 1987. She left Hungary just before the end of the Soviet occupation and the collapse of the Soviet Union. Her past experiences with social issues can be detected in her works created in the USA in the past 14 years. Ildikó’s work is rooted in two cultures—Hungarian and American—and influenced by her travels as a folk dancer and artist. Her two-dimensional images are derived from the traditions of figurative art mixed with traces of Central European folk art and four languages: Hungarian, Russian, English and Japanese. The complex nature of her art can be traced back to her interest in intercultural disciplines and globalization. Her three-dimensional art works consist of mostly ceramic works with some mixed media and bronze pieces. The use of these materials follows some tradition in Hungarian art but ceramics also plays a philosophically and conceptually important role in her art, symbolizing the fragile nature of the human body and soul. One must touch it and handle it gingerly and carefully. This is the basic principle and approach to her socially oriented sculptures. Along with the literal form, her work leaves enough room for abstract or conceptual interpretation.
