2007 Mercedes-Benz E320 BlueTec

The prius made eco-transport conspicuously sort of cool. Mercedes bluetec clean diesel makes it invisibly totally cool.

  • Okay, still a little too big for a Smurf to drive. But just exactly the size for me. And, la la la la la, it comes in blue. Or, more specifically, "Azzurro" in Fiat speak.

  • I had a chance to drive this vehicle for a few days (with Tech package) and came away pretty impressed. Let me tell you what it's got: Style: A cool new direction for Acura. Lower siting, carbon-fiber like grille and a cool silver overhang with the Acura logo carved in. Some people find the overhang, or 'beak' unappealing but I find it grows and you and fits a car in this price range. Brake and Reverse lights are LED's. Turn indicators on the side-mirrors and a spacious moon-roof. Technology: This has been reviewed as the "technophiles dream." It packs lots of cool features in, particularly with the Tech package. Here's an overview: - GPS with XM Traffic for smart routing decisions. -XM Radio and weather forecasts as well, including an XM Note function which records 15 seconds of any XM song, along with artist, band and song name so you can remember it later and decide to buy it or not. - Automatic HID headlights, rain sensing wipers - GPS/Sun Sensor climate control tracks the sun's position in the sky and adjusts the AC accordingly to keep your side cool - Very clear, large and bright rearview camera that engages automatically when put into reverse. Has moving guidelines that follow which way you turn the wheel to show you where you will head. Very useful for parallel parking. - Bluetooth link with almost any phone for handsfree talking. Also has a phonebook import to transfer your entire contact list to the car and easily choose who to call. Voice recognition for 20 contacts so just speak their name and talk. - Small screen in Dashboard that displays average mpg, real-time mpg, driving time, tire pressures, miles till empty, oil life and more - 120 Gigabyte hard drive hidden in the 6 CD changer. Automatically rips your CD's to the drive so you can play from any CD you've ever put in. -iPod Connection actually reads your iPod's artists, playlists and songs. Scroll through and select them using the GPS display. Also charges iPod while connected. - USB port so you can do the same with any portable music player or flash drive with songs on it. - Keyless ignition lets your keep the clicker in your pocket, purse or briefcase. Also automatically unlocks the door when you touch the handle. Convenient button on the handle lets you lock the car. - Voice command system to control everything from the AC, radio, GPS and more. Performance: 290 horsepower, 3.5 liter engine has plenty of pep. Fast accelerations with a nice 'vroom'. Nice road feel without being too bumpy. Comfort: Pretty nice. Spacious sedan roominess without appearing too big on the outside. Noise dampening provides a pretty quite ride. Suspension and shocks are great, giving you enough road feel while keeping you comfy. Luxurious leather with cool metallic accents. Front seats are heated and have 8-way power adjustments, including a power adjustable lumbar support. Dual AC system. Spacious console area can store all your electronics and junk. 2 large, size-adjusting cup holders. Telescopic steering wheel. 2 memory presets for your seat and mirrors. Entertainment: GPS includes 2009 Zagat reviews for restaurants as well as phone numbers, and is searchable by food style. AM/FM and XM radio with 12 presets for each, including the XM Note function. Automatic scanning for strongest stations in your area. ELS 10 speaker surround sound system with automatic adjustment for ambient noise. EQ lets you change Treble, Mids and Bass, as well as concentrate the sound in the front/back or right/left sides of the car. iPod connectivity that lets you search by artist, song or playlists and charges while connected. Also supports USB drives with music on them. Accessible Auxiliary input for any other sound source. Safety: Top ratings from the NHTSA. Multiple airbags including full-side (all the way to the back of the car) curtains and bottom curtain for the front seats. Vehicle Stability Assist independently engages each wheel brake/power to keep you on the road in tight turns, curves, spins or on ice. Rearview camera shows obstacles you may miss in the mirrors. Pressure sensors in each tire warn you of under or over inflated tires. Spoken reminders if you forget to buckle up. Overall, a party darn good car. Here are my only cons: -Not cheap, but a good deal for so many features. You may also find nice prices for lease. -Some people find the front of the car cringe-inducing. I think it grows on you. - Lower chassis means if you go too fast down a ramp or really steep hill you may scratch the undercarriage. - Can only store 20 voice dial names for your phonebook. Any other number must be accessed through the on-screen system, which is easy, but not as easy as saying 'Call John'. - WAY too many buttons. Can be overwhelming at first. Probably biggest con. You will need to refer to the manual from time to time to figure things out. Certain minor settings are hard to find. Radio only has a <--> switch so no knob for smooth tuning. - Requires premium fuel, 91 octane gas. It can run on regular but long term use may damage certain engine parts. It also only gets top mpg and performance on 91 octane. - Spoken 'Buckle Up' reminder may irk some, but you really should buckle up anyway; it only reminds you if you forget. Overall a pretty cool car with some great features. Take a test drive, read ratings and reviews and decide for yourself, but I like it.
