Secret Diary of a Call Girl DVD

A new guilty pleasure of mine. The DVD isn't out yet, but you can watch the first season on Showtime or find it online.

  • Everything you wanted to know about Jack Smith (New York's ultimate antihero and the original King of the Underground) but was afraid to ask.

Unlike capturing images from life, personal visions of imagination are constantly shifting and are by nature finicky and nearly impossible to access or capture. In "Phantasmagoria: The Visions of Lewis Carroll" Marilyn Manson, his magicians Alain de la Mata, Steven Klein and Benoît Debie evoke the sleepless heartache which once clung to the personality Charles Dodgson (Lewis Carroll). Personally I'm exited by the casting choices for this movie, as well as what may or may not be introduced into the ever expanding redefinition of horror genre.

This is a must see documentary about Amish teens. When they turn 16, they go through a period called 'Rumspringa' where they get indulge in the outside world in order to decide whether they want to remain in the church as adults. Pretty cool, huh? Rather than coercing kids through fear they allow them the freedom to experience and choose. Unfortunately, many of the kids go overboard (some even becoming drug addicts), however they demonstrate a kind of calm lucidity and mature rationalization of their circumstances for being, afterall, American teens. Its really interesting.

It was one of 2005's most critically acclaimed films, and won the Camera D'or for Best First Film at Cannes. Say if Diablo Cody had not only written Juno, but directed and starred in it as well, you'd be coming close to Me and You and Everyone We Know territory. Miranda July, who wrote, directed and stars as Christine, who falls in love with Richard (John Hawkes), a divorcing father and shoe salesman. How do hopeless people fall in love when they're hopeless? Watch this and find out. It's quietly confident, sunny, sweet and quirky, much in the vein of Juno but without the insanely hip dialogue. It's sweet central love story is tempered by some very audacious moments involving sex, but it's got so much charm it's hardly offensive enough to matter. Oh and ))<>((.

This is the remarkable story about life in 1931 Berlin from the perspective of a group of bonne vivants at the Kit Kat Club nightclub. At the centre of the tale is the American Sally Bowles (Liza Minnelli), her lover Brian (Michael York) and the nightclub's Master of Ceremonies played by the scene-stealing Joel Grey. As the economic, social and political situation in Germany deteriorates, the gang at the Kit Kat Club try to distract their patrons and themselves from what is happening. Cabaret won 8 Academy Awards in 1972. The songs are absolute classics and performed with the perfect amount of emotion, glee and sensuality, the costumes are dramatic and its easy to forget that this was made in the early 70s. A love song to the decadent side to Berlin, it's a truly remarkable film.

After her son is killed in an accident, Manuela (Cecilia Roth) leaves Madrid for her old haunts in Barcelona. She reconnects with an old friend, a pre-op transsexual prostitute named La Agrado (Antonia San Juan), who introduces her to Rosa (Penélope Cruz), a young nun who turns out to be pregnant. Meanwhile, Manuela becomes a personal assistant for Huma Rojo (Marisa Paredes), an actress currently playing Blanche DuBois in a production of A Streetcar Named Desire. All About My Mother traces the delicate web of friendship and loss that binds these women together. The movie is dedicated to the actresses of the world, so it's not surprising that all the performances are superb. Roth in particular anchors All About My Mother with compassion and generosity. But fans of writer-director Pedro Almodóvar needn't fret--as always, Almodóvar's work undermines conventional notions of sexual identity and embraces all human possibilities with bright colors and melodramatic plotting. However, All About My Mother approaches its twists and turns with a broader emotional scope than most of Almodóvar's work; even the more extravagant aspects of the story are presented quietly, to allow the sadness of life to be as present as the irrepressible vitality of the characters. Almodóvar embraces pettiness, jealousy, and grief as much as kindness, courage, and outrageousness, and the movie is the richer for it. --Bret Fetzer
