Square Pails
Made of HDPE (high density polyethylene) these plastic pails are safe for food storage. The square shape maximizes storage space for easy stacking, though they come in round buckets as well. These are four gallons. A pail with lid will cost around $5.75. The recommended amount of dry foods to store are 25 lbs. of grains (remember to diversify!) and 5 lbs. of beans per month for each adult (children are less, but I'm not sure what).
