The Killing (1956)
In collaboration with Jim Thompson, Stanley Kubrick delivers the perfect film noir. In 'Killing', Jim Thompson concoct a story about a desperate gang of lowlifes led by a grim and determined Sterling Hayden. Together they devise and execute a complex racetrack robbery, but inner tensions and the iron fist of fate work against them. The cast is uniformly superb, with Hayden, Jay C. Flippen, Timothy Carey, Marie Windsor, and Elisha Cook Jr. fleshing out characters torn between grandiose ambition and petty desire. This film is the perfect introduction to film noir - the strange narrative structure and Kubrick's bouncing back and forth in time makes this movie an absolute must-see.
A film that will go down as one of the most memorable war movies of all time.
I just love Stanley Kubrick and this was a great early movie or him.
