Poom Fine Jewelry

Poom Fine Jewelry uses "conflict-free" diamonds, and she donates a portion from every sale to various local animal charities. Her designs are unique and current, yet simple and timeless. This creation, cleverly-named "Mr. Big" in 18K rose-gold, diamonds, and pink-sapphires, forecasts the hottest upcoming trend in diamond pendant forms: the circular disc. Stay envious and ahead of the rest all the while knowing that with your purchase, you may have saved a child from horrid working conditions and a goat from starvation. "Mr. Big" retails for $5,000.

Alternative Gifts International is the perfect gift for so many people. For the person who has everything, for the person with special ties to a country or issue, for someone who is tender-hearted. There are many different projects to choose from; everything from helping child prostitutes in India to helping women in the U.S. learn basic work skills. See this page: http://www.altgifts.org/projects/ for a general overview of this year's projects. Why we should give: If we could reduce the world’s population to a village of precisely 100 people, with all existing human ratios remaining the same, the demographics would look something like this: 80 would live in substandard housing 67 would be unable to read 50 would be malnourished and 1 dying of starvation 33 would be without access to a safe water supply 39 would lack access to improved sanitation 24 would not have any electricity (And of the 76 that do have electricity, most would only use it for light at night.) 7 people would have access to the Internet 1 would have a college education 1 would have HIV 2 would be near birth; 1 near death 5 would control 32% of the entire world’s wealth; all 5 would be US citizens 33 would be receiving --and attempting to live on-- only 3% of the income of “the village”

Hands down the best film I've seen this year. A brilliant first feature film by video artist Steve McQueen about the story of IRA member Bobby Sands and the hunger strike he undertook while imprisoned in the early 1980s. Without posing moral judgement, the film highlights the subjectivity and power of conviction as well as its possible profundity and futility. This movie is scarce on dialogue but has one of the sharpest written 15 minute, single shot dialogue scenes I've ever had the pleasure of viewing.

Winner of four major awards, this updated edition of Joan Jacobs Brumberg's Fasting Girls, presents a history of women's food-refusal dating back as far as the sixteenth century. Here is a tableau of female self-denial: medieval martyrs who used starvation to demonstrate religious devotion, " wonders of science" whose families capitalized on their ability to survive on flower petals and air, silent screen stars whose strict " slimming" regimens inspired a generation. Here, too, is a fascinating look at how the cultural ramifications of the Industrial Revolution produced a disorder that continues to render privileged young women helpless. Incisive, compassionate, illuminating, Fasting Girls offers real understanding to victims and their families, clinicians, and all women who are interested in the origins and future of this complex, modern and characteristically female disease.

A great compilation of indie's hottest hitmakers, compiled by Natalie Portman. The proceeds from this album go to FINCA, a NGO dedicated to reliving poverty and starvation, and an organization for whom Natalie Portman is an ambassador of hope. A great selection of songs either way though, with tracks by Tokyo Police Club, Beirut, Tom Brosseau, Curumin, The Shins, Brett Dennen (who has an amazing folk song that's instantly catchy), Sean Hayes, Thee More Shallows, Angus & Julia Stone, Antony & The Johnsons, Vetiver, Norah Jones, Devendra Banhart, M. Ward, Wooden Wand, and Rogue Wave.
