Saraina Koat runs some really sweet charters to the Mentawais. I HIGHLY recommend them: organized, good crew, good food, knowledgeable guides, and nice boats. Also, a boat is totally the way to go. You have far more flexibility andchoice of breaks. Plus no bugs since you are offshore and the mozzies can't smell you from that far away

Meaning, of course, they don't have a gimmick. Just well-made stuff. These board shorts are made of quick-drying, extremely durable but comfortable nylon, and sewn in Southern California just as they have been for nearly 50 years. They seem to last just about forever. Many of the standard board shorts one sees today were originally patterned on Birdwell's. If you're looking for a liner, don't look here-- say hello to freedom as far as interior appointments are concerned. I've been wearing these since I was a kid and am currently rotating three pairs, all custom-ordered in my choices of color/cut/material. Birdwell Beach Britches is a small, family-owned, very low-tech company, so dealing with them takes a human touch and some patience sometimes. But it is well worth it!

This stuff has been around for ages and is used, if I'm not mistaken, for keeping one's board maintained. But it sounds SUPER dirty, doesn't it? It also comes in snowboard, skateboard, hockey and other assorted "flavors."

Don't buy it. It sucks. The water pressure is so low including the amount of water that comes out it feels like your showering under insect pee. Quiksilver puts a lot of research and development into their products and I have noticed that their boardshorts have “surfer friendly” seams. I recommend the Quiksilver Game On II boardshorts…or for that matter, any Quiksilver boardshort.

I don't actually have time to surf anymore... and when I do have time I sorta alreay know where I want to go based on what's happening in the water and how many people I feel like punching in the face (because that's how we roll in L.A.) but I bought this book because it made me laugh when I was flipping through it in the bookstore: They called out a certain Ho'wood producer as being a kook and made other apt-and-vaguely-cruel cracks. Worth getting if you know your spots and if you don't... and a decent option if you're looking to upgrade from Bank Wright's guide (even thought he wins in the "author whose name most qualifies him to write a surfing guide" category).
