  • I am really loving the Supernatural Superglossy by Philosophy (in open your heart 09). It definitely moisturizes really well and has a nice even color. It is not sticky AT ALL, but it doesn't last very long.

Another successful attempt by Stephen King to rob you of your sanity when the lights go out... Amazon.com Desperate for work, troubled high school teacher Jim Norman (Tim Matheson) relocates his family to his rural hometown after procuring a much-needed job there. Once home he must relive and confront a childhood nightmare: the high school hoodlums who murdered his older brother in a tunnel ambush, and were killed themselves by an oncoming train, are slowly rising from the grave to finish the job by killing Norman. The ghostly hooligans, who appear as flesh and blood to students, start "transferring" into school when some of Norman's students mysteriously perish; however their phantom, fire-spitting car is invisible to all but their victims. Suspicion for the inexplicably rising student-body count soon falls squarely on Norman, who must find a way to protect his wife and son from danger, vanquish the supernatural hoods, and cast off the shackles of his past. It's a fairly straightforward plot with some obvious elements, but Matheson and his supporting cast (including wife Brooke Adams) create a suspenseful, fear-inducing atmosphere under the able direction of Tom McLoughlin from a screenplay adaptation by Lawrence Konner and Mark Rosenthal. --Bryan Reesman

The Alphabet web gave a put pilot order to a new version of the supernatural tale, to be penned by Maggie Friedman ("Dawson's Creek"). The new "Witches" is said to be a variation on the 1987 feature of the same name. The movie, which starred Jack Nicholson, Cher, Susan Sarandon and Michelle Pfeiffer, was based on the John Updike novel about three women who turn to witchcraft after losing (or booting) the men in their lives. They conjure up a devil-like character, who then proceeds to seduce all three of them.

Includes works by Richard Dadd, John Anster Fitzgerald, Joseph Noel Paton, John Simmons and many others. Victorians desperately wanted to believe in fairies. Representing escape from the reality of an unromantic, materialistic and scientific age, fairies also gave Victorians an excuse to express in acceptable ways the repressed and subconscious aspirations of a nation. Between 1840 and 1870, the golden age of fairy painting, artists expressed these longings and aspirations, as well as reflecting those of a wider Victorian audience. Christopher Wood, a leading expert on Victorian art, takes us into a world of fantasy, magic, ghouls and ghosts, spiritualism and psychology. In discussing the fascination with fairies, he examines the impact of literature (notably "A Midsummer Night's Dream" and "The Tempest", dance and music on the paintings of the period, and shows how the Victorian art world found an acceptable outlet for portraying taboos like nudity, eroticism, opiates and the world of the supernatural.

Behe's book, Darwin's Black Box was an interesting case of what he calls "irreducible complexity". The basic idea is that there are things in the natural world that are so complex, that natural selection cannot be the causing agent, hence, he deduces an intelligent designer. It's a well written book and at times, a good critique on evolution, however, what this book lacks is real evidence for intelligent design. Unfortunately, because science is empirical in nature, and naturalistic in scope, any claims of the supernatural cannot be tested, repeated or measured... and this is what Behe's book and intelligent design lacks. The core argument sets up a dichotomy that says "there are problems with evolution and natural selection... so intelligent design must be right". It describes some of the problems with evolution, but brings no positive evidence for intelligent design (ID). Overall, an interesting read, but more hypothetical and philosophical than scientific.
