Royal Ballet Beatrix Potter

I absolutely adored these performances of The Tales of Beatrix Potter by The Royal Ballet when I was younger and I am so happy to find them on DVD!

This film was criticized as playing fast and loose with history and being vacuous to boot. It tells the story of arguably the most famous and infamous queen in history, French queen Marie Antoinette, whose husband was at the helm of a France dissolving into revolution. Sofia Coppola has crafted a believable story around the teenager thrust into the pomp of overblown French society. And too little positive attention has been given to the attention paid to all the costumes, sets and style of the film. That's what sticks out most - and Coppola should not be criticized for "glossing over" the historical details. This is a film about Marie Antoinette, not Marie Antoinette and the French Revolution. It's soundtracked to surprising effect with new wave - yet another thing Coppola's been criticised for - but it adds interest and allows for Marie Antoinette's story to have some modern relevance. It's a candy-coloured fantastic film full of visual delights and Kirsten Dunst does a stellar job in the lead role.

I think the copy that the show is using for marketing says it all: A riotous comedy thriller steeped in the glamour of 1960s Hollywood, DIE MOMMIE DIE! stars playwright Charles Busch as Angela Arden, a fallen pop diva trapped in a hateful marriage to film producer Sol Sussman. Desperate to find happiness with her younger lover, Angela becomes the prime suspect when Sol turns up dead. In a plot that reflects Greek tragedy as well as Hollywood kitsch, Angela’s manipulative daughter convinces her “emotionally disturbed” brother that together they must avenge their father’s death … by killing their mother! I've seen the show a few times now and can honestly say it is not to be missed! The show is running at New World Stages, 340 West 50th Street, New York, NY 10019. Performance Schedule: Tuesday-Friday at 8pm Saturday at 3pm and 7pm Sunday at 3pm and 7pm
