  • Demolished Thoughts, another lovely daydreamy album from Thurston Moore. Reminds me of the perfect spring morning.

Bridget Fonda is the chick who truly turned me on to grunge through her role as the lovelorn groupie in "Singles" (along with a little help from Matt Dillon, Kyra Sedgwick and Campbell Scott.) So, I am thrilled to see the renegade rock format get its very own tribute tome (penned, no less, by a member of Sonic Youth.) And it is being published just in time for gifting to those in your life with garage band aspirations. Sweetness.

Unfortunately it's the name of a page of photographs of guitars which have been stolen from the band Sonic Youth. For some time the band has been asking that these customized guitars be returned, until then I think it would be a great idea if the guitar makers like Fender and Gibson would recreate all of these guitars as part of their Artist series. Hey why not start with Kim Gordon's Gibson Snoopy Guitar.

In 2008 there were only 3 Amoeba Music Stores--the last real record stores on the Earth. What is remarkable is the live concerts that take place in the store several times a week (at Amoeba Music in Berkeley, San Francisco and Hollywood). And what more is that Amoeba has "FREE" video gallery on Ameoba.com featuring interviews, as well as exclusive live shows.

Nolan (vocals, guitar, piano, drums, electronics, unknown instrument); Elisa R. Ambrogio (vocals, guitar); Lee "Bruise" Ranaldo (guitar, glockenspiel). The noise-rock combo Magik Markers offered their most accessible recording to date with BOSS, released on Ecstatic Peace in 2007. The duo of Elisa Ambrogio and Pete Nolan give more than a few nods to Sonic Youth, but they still cut a distinct swath here that stands enough apart from their benefactors to be of note. For example, "Bad Dreams" finds Ambrogio in startlingly lovely voice, singing over soothing electronics and a gentle finger-picked guitar part. And while Magik Markers still attack with the squalls of improvised skronk ("Pat Garrett," "Circle") that brought them fame in underground circles, tracks such as "Last of the Lemach Line" and "Body Rot" show what happens when their arty exuberance is harnessed into identifiable song structures--the experience becomes one of listening as that energy breaks free from its confines.

Normally I'm a Kim Gordon type, but I've warmed up to the music of Thurston Moore over the years. "Trees Outside the Academy " turns out to be a excellent album, it's got a atmosphere to it which works extremely well for making out during the day, or maybe as a sonic story to take on a bike ride.
