Tennyo
Before Geisha there was Oiran. These educated Japanese courtesans, were entertainers using fine art, poetry, musical talents and other sort after skills. Summoned only by formal invitation and surrounded by strict rules of conduct, the Oirans paraded and entertained during the Edo period. Unlike the Geisha, the Oiran was mostly unseen by casual visitors, their street precessions in closed areas were shut off from the public eye. As depicted by Anna Tsuchiya's character in Sakuran, layers of color and elegance clad the courtesan's body. During the Oiran era the costumes became increasingly ornate and hairstyles (yokohyougo) complex. This exquisite piece of Japanese art by Eshimasa immortalizes the grace and beauty of the Oiran. It captures the alluring refinement of the elusive entertainers. This giclee piece is called Tennyo (angel) because of the captivating angel in traditional Japanese tattoo style on the Oiran's back.
