End Of Elsewhere: Travels Among The Tourists by Taras Grescoe

It's a great read, and I got lots of looks wile reading it at the cafe. I hope they do more issues in this format. Issue 33 of McSweeney’s Quarterly a one-time only, Sunday-edition-sized newspaper—the San Francisco Panorama. Packed with news and sports and arts coverage, and comics (sixteen pages of glorious, full-color comics, from Chris Ware and Dan Clowes and Art Spiegelman and many others besides) and a magazine and a weekend guide, is an attempt to demonstrate all the great things print journalism can (still) do, with as much first-rate writing and reportage and design (and posters and games and on-location Antarctic travelogues) as they can get in there. Expect journalism from Andrew Sean Greer, fiction from George Saunders and Roddy Doyle, dispatches from Afghanistan, and much, much more.

I never knew that the term travelogue was coined by Burton Holmes in 1904. Along with being one of the first people to trade in telling engaging stories of their travels to far off lands, he was also a wonderful photographer and documentarian of those places. This is a way for those of us who love travel to take a journey back in time.
