Dell Outlet

Dell Outlet

If you're looking for a computer, you like Dell quality, and you're willing to take a refurbished, returned, or scratch and dent, the "Dell Outlet" could be a good choice. Use the search form to specify your price, memory, disk, etc, and they'll show you specific computers in their inventory at that point in time. If you don't see what you want, try again a few hours later as great deals popup and disappear, even on a Saturday. Not every system offered here is at a significantly reduced price. Make sure you understand Dell's pricing on your target system so you'll recognize when the deal shows up. Once you find that bargain, add it to your shopping cart quickly to reserve it, and don't dally in making the final decision as you'll lose it with 15 minutes of inactivity.

  • Great screen, nice keyboard, fast processor, not plastic, great battery life, can run Windows if you need to do so, GREAT customer service. No Blu-Ray. Lets face it, you do not need it and it is buggy and a dying technology.

Let me count the ways: * runs ubuntu linux great (karmic koala): wifi (better range with karmic's 2.6.31 kernel), sleep, accelerated video, audio, power management, webcam, bluetooth * low price * weighs only 2.5 pounds * low power usage means over 4 hours of battery life, a DC converter (power plug) that's about 1/6 the size of the converter for my old 17-inch laptop, it never gets hot * multitouch mouse * solid state hard drive (less power, less heat, more crash-resistant) * expandable with cheap SD cards * bright screen * fan can be turned off (less power, less noise) * RAM expandable to 2GB

By the end of this week, Dell is expected to ship their new Inspiron subnotebook, a small (8.9" screen, 2.2 lbs) inexpensive competitor to the Asus eee PCs. These machines will have an option for flash based hard drives, and are shipped with either Ubuntu Linux (the cool kids' choice, which is pretty usable for non-technical people these days) or Windows XP. If I were going back to school this fall, I'd want something like this to take to class. Use the money you save by not getting a MacBook to pay for all your textbooks.

The installation is a breeze even relatively new hardware from my laptop was recognized without problems. If you are just thinking to try unbuntu, you can download a "live-cd". It allows you to run ubuntu without installing it. Ubuntu has all the necessary software for a rich internet experience included (Firefox, Thunderbird, IM). Also features Open Office which enables you to work on your Word and Excel files (Does not support the latest Word/Excel versions) For those who still need to use Windows from time to time, you can add ubuntu to your existing hard disk. At boot time, you will be asked which operating system you would like to use. Ubuntu can even read your data on the Windows partitions. Works with Vista too. Try it. its for free and a great product!

I just learned that my chocolate hardy heron t-shirt is from a limited-edition line of just 500. So, after enjoying the appreciative stares of Southern California today (I already got two compliments from real girls!), I plan to place it in a hermetically-sealed, lead-lined, farraday cage pyramid to preserve it forever. But I just may purchase a few of these sand-colored second-edition shirts for everyday use.

Thanks to Ask for recommending the Fujitsu ScanSnap S510 scanner (though I'm sure he bought the Mac version). This thing is amazing! I'm scanning in all my bills, statements, and other documents and then dropping them right into the shreader below the scanner. Use Amazon S3 with encryption for backup and my documents are safer for long term storage than in my house and they take up much less room. Best features: - This scanner is tiny. It's a bit wider than a sheet of paper and about as deep as a hardback book. - It is fast. Sheets you're scanning get zipped through one after the other. Oh, did I mention it has an automatic document feeder so I can scan my entire 50 page phone bill? - It scans both sides in the first pass. - The scanned image is crystal clear. It looks like a perfect reproduction of the printed document in every detail (including creases). - It works with Linux, though not right out of the box. Ask me how if you don't find it on Google. Now for the bad news: The Fujitsu ScanSnap S510 scanner is expensive. However, the usability means I actually use this scanner instead of letting a less expensive scanner gather dust.

Computer prices have been dropping for years, but it's still nicely shocking that you can buy a new computer for around $200! The Everex green PC runs linux (gOS is a version of Ubuntu) and comes with 512MB RAM, an 80GB hard drive, and a CD/RW+DVD-ROM combo drive. While it's certainly not as powerful as machines you can get for $500 or more, this is still a great choice for people on a budget, as a backup computer, or as an easy way to check out linux without risking messing up your current computer.

Use this to share a single audio out on your computer between your computer speakers and your headphones. You end up playing audio through your headphones even when you're listening to the speakers, but at least you don't have to go behind the computer to unplug and replug wires every time you want to switch. Note: Because you're splitting it, you will get a bit less volume out of the speakers as the same audio signal is driving both the speakers and the headphones. Warning: Make sure you turn the speakers OFF before you crank up the volume with your headphones on. Your co-workers will thank you (though I guess you won't be able to hear them with your headphones on).
