Daughters of the Dust

Julie Dash chronicles the lives of Gullah women confronting their cultural identity, history, and future. This movie is absolutely mesmerizing. Performances like these are rare!

  • I refuse to see this movie mostly because I'm terrified it could actually happen in my lifetime.

Night Shamalayan's best, it has what I would dare to say is one of the best suspense scenes in cinema. That's a big accomplishment. It's the scene where Joaquin Pheonix's character is watching tv in the closet. I won't ruin it for you, just watch it.

Maria is a Colombian teenager who's been dealt a really crappy hand. She works a factory job to help support her family, lives in a cramped home, and gets pregnant by her boyfriend. So to make money she makes the poor and highly dangerous decision of becoming a drug mule. Thats right, swallowing 60 bags of heroin and flying into New York City. Ugggggggg.

Gritty, gripping and an utterly magnetic turn by Ryan Gosling (who has done nothing but the highest quality work since this film introduced him). Gosling plays Danny Balint, a neo-nazi skinhead who is living an impossibly contradictory life because he's also a Jew. Violent, articulate and terrifyingly charismatic, Balint's only saving grace (weakness?) is what drives his hatred - his Judaism. This isn't an easy film and saying that is a vast understatement. It's brutally violent, frightening but also important.
