A People's History of the United States by Howard Zinn

I hated history in school, but it is never so interesting as when Howard Zinn tells it. This is unlike anything you will have learned in school. Fascinating and moving... And Audible.com is a really really wonderful site for audiobooks. I've been a loyal member for years.

  • I actually really want this book. One of my most favorite things ever is finding out how places got their names.

I really want to read this book by activist and social critic Naomi Wolf who explains in very simple language how are democracy is in jeopardy at this very moment. And not from an external threat, but from what the "forefathers" of the U.S. talked about in the Declaration of Independence. A truly patriotic book for those who want to make sure life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness are not compromised and remain the basic tenets of our democracy.

Know your rights as an individual and a nation. This historical declaration informs the people of how to keep your government in check and what the gov't should and SHOULD NOT do. Pay close attention to how many violations of the people's rights (as indicated in the declaration) have been in practice under the current administration. Uh oh. Sound familiar. History does repeat itself. So get out in vote. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RjALf12PAWc

Maybe I was too young at the time to read the book, but seeing the movie as an adult didn't make this story easier to swallow. The story is about an ex slave haunted by the trauma and terror of her past life. Having been brutalized savagely by her slave masters, she made a desperate choice which resulted in the death of her own children. Now, with a new life and a teen daughter, she is haunted, literally by a spirit that may have something to do with the mysterious young woman that has just entered her family's life.
