Berhardt Design: Edge Chair

Berhardt Design: Edge Chair

The forward-thinkers at Bernhardt Design Press are smart enough to look out behind. Thus was born their Art Center College of Design Collection, crafted by students from the renowned Los Angeles art school. The Edge chair by industrial-design student Justin Porcano is all cushioned angles: upholstered leather or fabric cushions atop a wide, slant-legged, solid walnut shell. Back and seat cushions extend slightly past the edge of the frame (particularly kind to the back of the knee), perhaps the detail for which the chair is named. May you find one in the next waiting room. Also in white or sky blue.

A very simple old school design, that only gets better the more its used. about: Hastoe is a Windsor chair designed by Matthew Hilton and distributed exclusively by De La Espada. Named after a neighbouring village of High Wycome in Buckinghamshire, where the Windsor chair originated, the chair is made of ash and walnut using exclusively traditional Windsor chair making techniques in order to further the story, the evolution of the English Windsor chair. De La Espada, in its role as design manager for Matthew Hilton Ltd, and Matthew Hilton himself, wanted to involve a manufacturer with history and experience in building the Windsor chair. Ercol, the UK's largest manufacturer of solid wood furniture with nearly 100 years of history, was the perfect solution. Ercol is the last of the High Wycombe furniture makers whose beginnings were in chairs of this type. De La Espada products are constructed of timber derived from sustainable forests in the United States. These forests are certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), a non-profit organization who sets high environmental standards for responsible forest management.

I can’t tell you how long I was on a hunt for the perfect white chairs. For months and months I debated over one chair and the next. I loved the Gus Design Group Thompson Chairs in white and natural but just wasn’t sold on the color of the wood. Now, after having purchased 10 vintage modern chairs off Ebay which I am going to have to strip the material, sand and stain (aka a major project), the Gus Design Group Thompson Chairs in walnut have made it to DP. Aye carumba! I love the contrast of the white and walnut and the shape looks so simple yet sophisticated. Ho hum. Maybe in my next life.

Now that Joseph Jeup owns some CNC (computerized numerically controlled) machines, he can think increasingly about making more of his sculptural furniture designs. Freed from all that hand-hewing, this master of veneers may now focus his attention even more closely on hand-wrought finishes. Successful mass-produced items must widely suit, and the low-slung angle and open back to the Riparo chair have been carefully engineered for the comfort of tall and small alike. In two wood species--Santos Rosewood and Walnut--and twelve finishes. Trade only.
